The Smile
Submitted by Renee Obsidianwords on November 29, 2008 - 9:37am.The smile. The eyes give you away. Once again emotion is felt-- deception , fallacy.
Body language like the dance of some leaf caught in the wind in an alley...the leaf has no where to go, it is trapped and there it does its dance round in circles up and down...
The smile. The eyes give you away. Once again emotion is felt-- fear , distress.
Feelings roll into the mind like a dam that has given way, there is no stopping the rush, just ride the cascade as it rushes into the place where the mind understands and forms just the right words....

Responding to Stan Sheridan stating we are SO UNPROFESSIONAL
Submitted by Sapient on October 13, 2008 - 6:58pm.I received an email recently that illustrated an abnormally high amount of hypocrisy and illogical douchebaggery. I will respond bit by bit below and then send a note to Stan so he can see how foolish he has made himself out to be.

i wanted to state a quick evaluation of your presence on Dateline.
The show was called "Nightline."
Both of your parties, especially "Kelly" was SO UNPROFESSIONAL that I quickly decided that whatever you had to say, I was not interested in.
R.E.S.P.E.C.T-What it means to mean with regard to Religion.
Submitted by metroatheists on October 11, 2008 - 2:20pm.This blog will be different for me since this one won't be loaded with facts, figures, cites and other drab blather that I normally write. This blog is about respecting religious views. Faith. An illogical belief that is devoid of proof. Where else in our discourse do we actually use this word properly? I don't mean the colloquial meaning, in sentences such as "I have faith in him/her". For instance, when has anybody (that isn't completely deranged) actually had faith in any material object? For those that do, society tends to pluck up out and have them reside in a special rooms with padded walls. Why? Because it is obvious that any unjustified and illogical belief in material objects is absurd. So then, why do we tolerate it when the faith is in something that we can not see and is not material?

Fear the Big Pink Bunny!
Submitted by GermanMike on October 5, 2008 - 12:41pm.
I had a vision last night! The Big Pink Bunny will come to lacerate all Christian believers. Turn from your faith as long as there is still time, because the wrath of the Big Pink Bunny will be horrible.
Of course you might laugh at this Big Pink Bunny, but it told me in my dreams that there will come scoffers and mockers who will laugh into the face of his prophet.
Fear the Big Pink Bunny!!!
(Disclaimer: I don't hate Christians - The Big Pink Bunny does.)

Artificial Intelligence
Submitted by metroatheists on September 25, 2008 - 10:52pm.If the intelligence of the human mind is the product of the a physical mind, and thusly its actions dictated by physical laws, then it is reasonable to conclude that an artificial mind of equal physical capacity would be necessarily intelligent. This is the principle of multiple realizability (1). For any process that produces an affect, there is no reason to assume that said process is the only means of producing the very same affect. That a form produces or infers a specific action does not logically imply that no other form could produce the same action. While form must play a role in considering artificial intelligence, specific form does not need to be considered.
If the activities of the mind are not purely physical, and the emergent characteristics of the mind are not solely accounted for by said activities, then it would be unreasonable to conclude that an artificial mind would be necessarily intelligent. If the latter case is true, it may be that, while some aspects of the mind are partly or purely immaterial, others, such as intelligence, may not be. If the a specific causal relationship can be found between every aspect of intelligence and a physical process, then the hypothesis of the immaterial mind would be falsified. The hypothesis is worthy of some consideration because it explains everything we have observed so far. However, even prior to falsification the scientific community should not seriously consider the hypothesis.
Critiquing Descartes
Submitted by metroatheists on September 25, 2008 - 10:50pm.When Descartes investigated the implications of skepticism, i.e., that because we can cast doubt on any supposition, we can never be certain that our supposition is correct, he proposed that doubting ones own existence necessarily affirms it and, thus, of at least one thing a person can be certain beyond any doubt; that they exist. In order for an entity doubt anything at all, even that it exist, it must first exist to do so. Descartes proposal is immune to the skeptics doubt because the very practice of doubt confirms it to be true. Although I would not describe myself as a rationalist, as I agree with Kant’s interpretation of a priori knowledge, I do think it solves that problem of skepticism. In considering Descartes’ proposal, I find myself wondering if it is possible to contemplate ones own existence having never experienced the reality that existence must either define or be a constituent of.
