#0021 RRS Newsletter for June 25, 2007

Hello again, all! I trust you all had a fun weekend, or at least a boring one. I spent a good deal of time watching some videos on youtube, and I will be sharing those with you all in installments. Three separate series, each one at least 6 parts each. Two of which deal with astronomy, and the third deals with biological chemistry. All you science geeks out there should love 'em! I certainly did. I will take them one at a time, posting three parts everyday until they're all used up. So this will take me well into next week, at which time I will probably have new ones to share.
Todays newsletter is pretty heavy on the videos, too. So for those who've had a rough weekend, don't worry, not much reading involved today. Just push play and veg!
My room mate and his girlfriend attended a local American Atheist picnic today, and brought back some cool flyers. I've posted one here, at the top of the "Community" section. I was unable to attend this function, since I had to work today (and i got up late, ahem).
That's about all for now,
Thanks for reading,
Jack

Theists constantly claim that the possibility of our world having the conditions necessary for life is far too great without an intelligent designer. However, when you view the immensity of what little universe we know of, the conditions necessary for the evolution of life are not so unlikely.

eltower, 24/06/2007 | Gospel of Reason
I cannot believe in absolute truths. It goes against my character. Although I try as much as I can to stand by my principles, my mind is always open to new theories, interpretations and to new evidence. Hence my close affiliation with the scientific method.
If there really is one absolute truth out there, it is that the scientific method Works. With a capital W. The results it produces are certainly not open to the same luxurious claim - the method used to find these claims, however, always has, does and will work.
In fact, brushing aside the technicalities of experimental sciences for one second, everyone can engage in the scientific method! Try this:
Establish a negative hypothesis. It tends to describe existing (or what seem to be existing) conditions - a banal, sensationalistic example could be: "John is not going out with Jane". You take this to be the assumption that pervades the whole test. You assume that statement to be true, and now you test it with evidence. For example, you might find that: "John took Jane out to lunch on Friday" and "John took Jane on a romantic camping trip last weekend". You estimate the probability of the event happening under the conditions of "John is not going out with Jane". Since it is pretty unlikely that John would not be going out with Jane _and_ take her to a romantic camping trip, you decide that the negative hypothesis is false! You therefore accept an alternative one which could explain the evidence, for example: "John _is_ going out with Jane".
The point is to be sceptic by absolute default. The null hypothesis test described above is the paragon of scepticality. You tend to assume existing conditions. 500 years ago, a negative hypothesis could have been "The Earth is not spherical". Since the evidence collected couldn't possibly fit in with the hypothesis, you accept an alternative hypothesis, for example: "The Earth _is_ spherical". At all times you cling to already established assumptions, but you are ready to discard them as soon as evidence arrives.
This is very important, and underlies much of the humanist and atheist philosophies.
There's nothing wrong with scepticism. There's a lot wrong with not being sceptic. It's one thing to be gullible - I'm pretty gullible, I'll look when someone plays the stupid "You've got a stain on your shirt" joke on me. But when someone makes a bold assertion, then my scepticism engages automatically, no forewarning.
If someone were to approach me today and tell me "The alignment of Saturn with Jupiter means that you will run into financial trouble" and tomorrow I realise my paycheck is late, I wouldn't start drawing up solar system charts to track my stock portfolios. It would be meaningless, because under the condition "Astrology does _not_ mean a thing in the world", me running into financial shortcomings is pretty damn likely. This kind of claim, a trademark of astrology and other pseudosciences, is what I call 'associating soda cans with rabbits'.
A soda can is not evidence of rabbits, or viceversa. You cannot imply the existence of one from the other because they're completely irrelevant from each other. If someone told you "Soda cans! Therefore, rabbits", I hope that you would just keep walking, maybe drop a penny into the jar. But as incredible as it sounds, that fallacious argument is _constantly_ used all over. The scientific method is one which enables you to discern the causality and correlation between two or more different things, and whether one thing means another.
The scientific method also has immediate practical benefits other than engaging you in honest truth seeking (if you really need any more benefits). It activates your prefrontal cortex, as Dr. Kawashima might say. It turns your brain on, gives it exercise. If you simply accept everything you're spoon-fed on the 6 o'clock news, your brain isn't getting much exercise. If you think twice about each item of news - context, history, who benefits in delivering it in a particular way, etc. then you start to use your gray matter.
The scientific method does not mean flip-flopping or fence-sitting. Quite the contrary. At some point, once you prove or disprove a negative hypothesis, you then continue your existence assuming your conclusion until further evidence turns up. There's no flip-flopping involved - in fact, if you wanted to be 100% non-hypocritical, then you would have to live with assumptions you picked up originally, and I can only shudder to imagine what the world would be like today if we lived with 500 year old or even just 50 year old assumptions about the world we live in.
So challenge pre-conceived notions. Question statements. Examine context. Establish negative hypotheses - engage in the scientific method. Not only is it the only way to real truth but the scientific mentality, curiously enough, is inextricably linked to the preservation of your civil liberties.
This should probably go under "Entertainment"...

Holy Drinking Water
Would you like to help our troops out in Iraq? Well...
"Due to requests from our customers, you can now donate Holy Drinking Water™ to our troops in Iraq for spiritual support and to boost their spirits."
That's right folks, I kid you not. I thought this was some kind of satirical website when first clicked on this link I received from my friend Engle but he assured me that is was legit. He said he learned about it while watching CNN so I did a quick search on the Internet and discovered several news stories on this product.
According to the products website:
"The initial idea behind this product is to provide people with a daily reminder that they can and should do good in life and that they may not be as bad of a person as they think."
It also states that:
"Community support throughout the United States has been overwhelming!" and "Clergy are signing up nationwide to take part in the blessing. We hope to eventually have Clergy from all denominations bless our Holy Drinking Water™. "
For those infidels and "sinners" out there who might be thinking of trying this product, you might want to take their warning into consideration:
"If you are a sinner or evil in nature, this product may cause burning, intense heat, sweating, skin irritations, rashes, itchiness, vomiting, bloodshot and watery eyes, pale skin color, and oral irritations."
And for you religious folk they offer a much milder warning:
"Consuming Holy Drinking Water ™ should not replace attending church or any other establishment of worship. "
According to NBC Holy Drinking Water is
"the brainchild of Brian Germann, a high tech executive by trade. Holy Drinking Water has now become a hit. About 3,000 bottles of Holy Drinking Water have been sold since it went on the market three months ago."
I'm all for the entrepreneurial spirit but Mr. Germann is really showing his lack of decency by using the troops plight in Iraq to promote this ridiculous product.

Only 5 to 7 years in jail for religiously motivated rape.

Man receives only five to seven years in jail for religiously motivated rape.
An Australian Muslim was recently sentenced to five years in jail for the brutal rape of a Muslim woman who was seen reading a Christian Bible.
The woman, who cannot be named, arrived in Australia as a refugee from Iraq.
But she said that even when she was jailed by dictator Saddam Hussein, she never feared for her life the way she did after the rape.
"It is better if I'm dead," she told the court.
She had been warned by men in the Muslim community that Christians
were "infidel people" and if she went with them, her killing "would be halal" - meaning her killer would go to heaven. It appears that this man is considered a hero by his peers in the Muslim world and can expect to meet his beloved Allah in this mythical Heaven once his time is up here on Earth.
In September 2002, Al-Shawany lured the woman to a unit at Warwick Farm, claiming to have news about her family in Iraq.
She was hit on the head and had her hijab tied around her face before Al-Shawany raped her twice...
Afterwards Al-Shawany told her: "Let your Christ benefit you now".
Al-Shawany was sentenced to a maximum of seven-and-a-half yeas in jail but on has to serve five years and then he will be eligible for parole. What kind of crap is this? Five years and then he gets the opportunity to terrorize this woman again. That is if some other religious fanatics in the country don't decide to stone her to death while he is imprisoned.
She said she was afraid she would be killed, either in retribution by Al-Shawany's family or in an "honour killing".
"In Iraq, if some woman has got a problem like this, her husband can kill her, or her brother or her uncle can kill her, without question," the victim wrote.
"They can kill me here too in Australia. Before I'm not afraid of anyone. Even when Saddam Hussein put me in jail, I was still strong.
"Now I'm afraid all the time."
She said her husband had refused to speak to her for months because of the shame she brought on the family.
She had grown isolated within the Iraqi community and feared people "will say I'm a bad woman".
"I feel like a piece of dirt," she wrote. "I came to Australia for freedom and Abdul Reda took my freedom away."
For those who have supported Bush's attack on The Separation of Church and State in this country, please take note. Acts of violence like this is the type of injustice that gets condoned when laws are based on religious dogma.
Judge Knox found the offender believed the sexual assault was justified because the woman was considered an "infidel" for reading the Bible and associating with Christians.
"What he did was an attempt to enforce his religious or cultural views on his former countrywoman," Judge Knox said.
"Such behaviour is completely intolerable and totally unacceptable in this community."
I think this type of behavior should be unacceptable in any community. Damn cultural relativism and those who promote it. You can read the complete article here.
Much thanks to Dogma Free America for informing me of this story.

I was born in a Muslim family. I was forced by mother to read the Koran every morning, to pray namaz, and to fast during Ramadan.
While I was growing up, I was taken by my mother to a pit, a religious cult leader respected by Muslims. He had his own group, who believed in a genie and superstitions. The pit declared that
women who laughed in front of men and went out of the house had been taken over by the genie and they were brutally beaten by the pit so that the genie would leave. He gave a scary description
of hell. Whoever visited him gave money.
The pir was surrounded by young women who massaged his body and served him whatever he needed. One day, in my presence, he declared that keyamout, the destruction day of the Earth, was coming soon, and that there was no need for women to marry. They should sacrifice their lives for Allah.
I was' horrified to see all the torture he did to get rid of the genie and to listen to the description of hell and waiting for keyamout. But it did not come.
The pir used to treat sick people by uttering sura and beating them. Water was declared holy and said to cure sick people. The sick became sicker after drinking the water. I was also treated by a pit, but I was not cured until my physician father treated me with scientific medicine.
I was encouraged by my father to get a secular education. I learned about the big bang, evolution, and the solar system and became suspicious about Allah's six-day adventure to make the whole
universe, the Adam and Eve story, and stories of suns moving around the Earth and mountains like nails to balance the Earth so that the Earth would not fall down. My mother asked me not to ask any questions about Allah and to have blind faith in Allah. I could not be blind.
Then I studied the Koran instead of reading it without knowing the meaning. I found it total bull-shit. The Koran, believed by millions, supported slavery and inequalities among people - in other countries the equality of women had been established as a human right and the moon had already been won by men. Men had the right to marry four times, divorce, have sex with female slaves, and
beat their wives. Women were to hide their bodies because the female body is simply a sexual object. Women were not allowed to divorce their husbands, enjoy inheritance, or have their testimony in court considered as seriously as men's. I found that Allah prescribed Muslims to hate non-Muslims and kill apostates.
With my own conscience I found religion ridiculous because it stops freethought, reason, and rationality. My father told me to believe nothing without reason. I did that. I could not believe religion and I became an atheist. I started writing against religion and all the religious superstitions. I was attacked, verbally, physically. The outrage of the religious people was so big that I had to leave my country.
I lived in one of the poorest countries in the world. I saw how poverty was glorified by religion and how the poor are exploited. It is said the poor are sent to the Earth to prove their strong faith for Allah in their miserable life. I have not seen any religious teaching that calls for a cure for poverty. Instead the rich are supposed to make Allah happy by giving some help (Mother Teresa's type of help). The poor should remain poor in society, and opportunists can use them to buy a ticket for heaven.
So I don't accept Allah, His cruel unholiness. I have my own conscience, which inspired me to support a society based on equality and rationality. Religion is the cause of fanaticism, bloodshed, hatred, racism, conflict. Humanism can only make people humane and make the world livable.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali: It's Just Another Book
----------------- Bulletin Message -----------------
From: The Secret Delusion
Date: Jun 24, 2007 4:30 PM
From: Susan B.
"I am a Muslim because I understand why so many Muslims are silent when the Holy Book is invoked to behead captured aid workers, journalists and other Western wanderers.
I am a Muslim because i understand why a woman ululates when her son dies in a suicide bombing. She rejoices for her son's closeness to God."
Ayaan Hirsi Ali
Not words that you might expect from one of the world's supposedly most anti-Islamic apostate writers.
Last night, i joined 1,200 others at the Sydney Recital Hall to worship at the temple of Ayaan Hirsi Ali. She had been invited to close the Sydney Writer's Festival - a brave choice on the part of Artistic Director, Wendy Were.
The audience were hardly your typical neocon warmonger crowd. Women outnumbered men 2:1 and the luvvy quota was high. Ms. Were opened her introductory speech by offering thanks to the local Aboriginal tribe for lending their land to host the Festival. She was cheered to the rafters.
The arrival of Ayaan Hirsi Ali was quite dramatic. Because so much attention is focused on her words and her actions, little time is spent discussing her look. She is, quite simply, beautiful. Very tall, slender and dressed all in black leather save for an African shawl draped across her tiny shoulders, she looked more at home with Naomi Campbell than Naomi Wolf.
However you are quickly reminded that she is no catwalk super-model when she opens her mouth. Rather than a blurred trans-Atlantic drawl, she speaks her English with the soft, almost giggly voice of an African schoolgirl. It is just not what you expect from such a towering political figure. It is a reminder of who she is rather than who people have turned her into.
That she is a polarising figure is indisputable. Blog chatter in advance of her talk had produced some of the most vitriolic dialogue that i have seen since arriving here last year. She is a Muslim apostate, a cheerleader for GWB's War on Terror, scream the Left. Nonsense, retort the Right, she is a victim, an oppressed spokesperson for the downtrodden. Conversations amongst us non-Muslims focused almost entirely on the subject of female genital mutilation, or the sanitised 'FGM'.
I accept the arguments made by some of the more enlightened bloggers at LP and by Kizzie, a Sudanese blogger, that her traumatic experiences have so affected her experiences of Islam that she confuses culture and religion, but i would answer that for her to remain impartial is akin to asking an Auschwitz survivor not to let his experiences of the concentration camps colour his views on Nazi-ism.
However Ayaan ignored us all. FGM warranted barely a mention. Her speech was about a Book.
"a bestseller among the wealthy and distributed free of charge to the poor. It is a book that should not be put on the ground. A book that should not be touched by a menstruating woman. It is a book that inspires one man to put his forehead on the ground in piety, and can rouse another to war. It is a book that contends that the greatest act of worship an individual can aspire to is committing suicide, while taking the life of a sinner.
It's author has 99 names but not one of them appears on the cover. This book demands total submission by its readers. And has captured the imagination of more than a billion people. This book impressed me even before I could read. To touch the book I first had to wash my hands, then my face, mouth, and my arms, all the way up to the elbows, run some water over my hair and ears and wash my feet. Everything about it was sacred."
and one particular aspect of this book,
"The Day of Judgement, the day God will judge us, the day my father warned us would be severe for us if we failed to live by The Book"
Her speech was about her upbringing, her fear and her love of the Book, and of her close bond with her sister. She regaled her audience with charming tales of how they would hide pages of romantic novels in betwen pages of the Koran, anything to wile away the hours of boredom, brought on by their father's refusal to allow them out of the house - a house that was kept locked by "three padlocks". She did not talk about her sister's later suicide. Or of their mutilation at age five.
She talked of how she, like most Western teenagers, rebelled against her parents' wishes and ultimately fled an arranged marriage to a distant cousin,
"The hell at the end of life for me seemed abstract, whereas the hell of being forced to submit to a stranger, was immediate, and final. This would be the hell of never feeling love, the hell of never choosing my mate, the hell of spending my life with a man to whom I would have to ask permission before being allowed to exercise my everyday freedom. A man who could take my body without permission. This stranger had the Holy Book on his side."
She talked of how she demanded the beheading of Salman Rushdie as a schoolgirl following the publication of the Satanic Verses, of how she learned to despise Israel without knowing a thing about it.
And then she spoke of September 11th, 2001.
"On a bright Tuesday morning in New York and Washington, planes full of people flew into buildings full of people. I prayed this was not the work of Muslims. I picked up the Holy Book and there I found Osama bin Laden's words of justification. Did the attacks stem from true belief in true Islam? I had to make the leap to believing the Holy Book was relative - not absolute, not the literal syllables pronounced by God, but a historical record, written by men 150 years after the Prophet Muhammad's death. In other words, it was just another book."
She dismissed those critics who claim she is anti-Islamic with the words I started this article with. But she also added that she is not a Muslim because
"I have lost the fear of the Holy Book. I have lost the terror of being burned alive after I die. I am not a Muslim because I lost respect for the book and its author and his messenger. I lost respect for them because of their bloodthirsty demands to kill and hate. I now feel the common humanity with those I once shunned: the Jews, Christians, atheists, gays, sinners of all stripes and colours. I lost respect not for Muslims but for what they fear."
She finished with a plea to Australians not to ignore the Saudi-funded Muslim schools on our doorstep that "preach a closed mind, that preach hatred of the Jew, that preach the terror of the Day, that preach total submission."
This largely female writer/luvvy/theatre crowd cheered her enthusiastically at the end of her speech. Though not all stood for her, all had been touched by her magic.
Note - i made notes in a dimly lit theatre. Hence the quotes may not be entirely verbatim accurate. However, the message is true. I make no apology if i sound a little like a star-struck schoolgirl meeting Justin Timberlake for the first time.

Why the U.S. will never legalize Gay Marriage

This is brilliant...a repost from Simone!
*********
Why Gay Marriage is "Wrong" (continue reading...)
01) Being gay is not "natural". Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning.
02) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.
03) Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.
04) Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.
05) Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of Britany Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.
06) Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children.
07) Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.
08) Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America.
09) Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.
10) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.
Re-post this if you believe love makes a marriage....and not this stupid crap society believes in.
The darkness of godlessness lets wisdom shine.
