five minutes to support free speech
Submitted by shelley on December 6, 2008 - 4:30pm.In the past few weeks, the Freedom From Religion Foundation’s billboard ("Imagine No Religion" ) in the city of Rancho Cucamonga, CA was taken down... and... the Atheist Foundation of Australia was denied ad space on buses. Regardless of our beliefs or lack thereof, we should all be completely appalled.
Here in the DC area, however, the American Humanist Association (AHA) has purchased ad space ("Why believe in a god? Do good for goodness' sake." ) on Metro buses. The buses are operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. Apparently Metro has currently received 70 some compliments and 200 and some complains. A few days ago Metro had only received 1 compliment.
I'd like to encourage everyone to pick up the phone and compliment Metro on selling ad space to everyone. You can make a comment to Metro here: http://www.wmata.com/riding/ridercomment.cfm or by calling their media relations number - 202-962-1051. I posted this idea on the Beltway Atheists mailing list a few days ago and one of our members mentioned that they were told by Metro to call the following number - 202-637-1328.

Meeting Lori Lipman Brown
Submitted by shelley on February 3, 2008 - 8:46pm.Saturday (2/2/08) many of us awesome VA people gathered to meet Lori Lipman Brown. Lori is incredible, creative, and resourceful!
The event was hosted by RAFT (Richmond Area Free Thinkers) - RAFT is a chapter of WASH. Members from the Richmond AU (Americans United for Separation of Church and State) and RRNA (Richmond Reason and Naturalism Association) were there as well.
We also had a number of long distance guests from Virginia Freethought Renanisance (RRS Affiliate), Charlottesville Skeptics, and UVA's "Virginia Atheists and Agnostics." (Thanks you guys for making the trip. We all *loved* meeting each and every one of you.)
I should say that again - It was really great to meet everyone and hopefully we'll have another joint event soon.
If I missed any groups or links you all are welcome to post them here.
