Atheist Divisiveness and Dogmatism
Submitted by kellym78 on January 10, 2008 - 7:19am.Lately, I've been realizing that, despite what I had come to believe, religion is not the biggest danger to society. Poor thinking is. Adherence to mindless dogmatism is. The self-serving desire to fit everybody into a mold, likely similar to your own, is. These traits are unfortunately not limited to theists.
Obviously, being a member of the Rational Response Squad puts me in a position to be critiqued and vilified by the people who possess the aforementioned character flaws, and recently I've been seeing it almost constantly. It literally pains me to see that so many who have managed to escape religion still cling to so many other similarly irrational ideas and use such blatantly poor logic-particularly if it involves us. Have we done some controversial things? Sure. Are we brash, loud-mouthed, occasionally immature, and possibly arrogant? Sometimes, yes. Have we made mistakes? Of course-show me one person who hasn't, and I'll show you a liar. Do we have conversations about sex, have ads all over the place containing visible cleavage (OMGZ!), and in general like to have some "old-fashioned" fun? Most definitely. Do you know why? Because atheists don't have to be stodgy intellectuals!
"What are you doing here?": man asks wife at brothel
Submitted by Zombie on January 10, 2008 - 12:27am.This has abosultly nothing to do with the RRS or atheism, but I found it hilarious and thought I would share.
A Polish man got the shock of his life when he visited a brothel and spotted his wife among the establishment's employees.Polish tabloid Super Express said the woman had been making some extra money on the side while telling her husband she worked at a store in a nearby town.
"I was dumfounded. I thought I was dreaming," the husband told the newspaper on Wednesday.
The couple, married for 14 years, are now divorcing, the newspaper reported.
Religion in politics is 'up in the air'
Submitted by Zombie on January 9, 2008 - 6:07pm.I found this article on the web while surfing aimlessly as I am wont to do.
Speaking at Adath Yeshurun Synagogue in Aiken on Monday, Millies said the campaign is suggesting three key situations – the decline and rebirth of the Religious Right, and with Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, a 21st-century introduction of "faithful Democrats."
An interesting analysis of the current state of religion in american politics.

RELIGION AND CHILD ABUSE
Submitted by Zombie on January 9, 2008 - 6:01pm.A blog from a former christian, detailing what it was like to be one of the kids in a camp like the ones shown in jesus camp.
As you'll find out by reading, the reason I fight is actually quite personal--I hope that by educating people that we can stop kids--including the "Jesus Camp" kids--from living with the same longterm scars that myself and other walkaways deal with every day...and hopefully also to keep the whole country from living in that hell.
I look forward to reading more on that blog, anyone else interested in the topic might enjoy doing the same.

Why Do Atheists Argue?
Submitted by Zombie on January 8, 2008 - 3:37pm.A good response to the question can be found here.
I argue because I care about people, because it saddens me to see people frittering away a good portion of their very short time on earth in pursuit of pointless things, like worshipping and praying to a malicious supernatural entity, e.g. the Abrahamic God. Think of how many things you could otherwise be using that time for, things that would actually be helping to make this a better world to live in.
The entire article is a good read, I suggest everyone go there and take a look at it.

The weaker sex?
Submitted by Zombie on January 8, 2008 - 3:30pm.I don't know why this would be, perhaps because the lot of women in much of the world is much worse than mens?
Women who stop being religiously active are three times more likely to suffer generalized anxiety disorder than women who have always been religiously active, researchers report.
In contrast, the researchers found that men who stopped being religiously active were less likely to suffer major depression than men who had always been religiously active.
Funny as "hell"

Quote: Top 10 Signs You’re a Fundamentalist Christian
10 - You vigorously deny the existence of thousands of gods claimed by other religions, but feel outraged when someone denies the existence of yours.
9 - You feel insulted and “dehumanized” when scientists say that people evolved from other life forms, but you have no problem with the Biblical claim that we were created from dirt.
8 - You laugh at polytheists, but you have no problem believing in a Triune God.
7 - Your face turns purple when you hear of the “atrocities” attributed to Allah, but you don’t even flinch when hearing about how God/Jehovah slaughtered all the babies of Egypt in “Exodus” and ordered the elimination of entire ethnic groups in “Joshua” including women, children, and trees!
6 - You laugh at Hindu beliefs that deify humans, and Greek claims about gods sleeping with women, but you have no problem believing that the Holy Spirit impregnated Mary, who then gave birth to a man-god who got killed, came back to life and then ascended into the sky.
5 - You are willing to spend your life looking for little loopholes in the scientifically established age of Earth (few billion years), but you find nothing wrong with believing dates recorded by Bronze Age tribesmen sitting in their tents and guessing that Earth is a few generations old.

The gospel of money
Submitted by Zombie on January 8, 2008 - 1:06am.And they say atheists have no morals?
They make no apologies for the way they spend their salaries, speaking fees, CD and book royalties and "love offerings," lavish gifts of cash and jewelry.
I don`t really have much to add to this post, it pretty much speaks for itself, although I doubt anyone with a brain could be suprised.
