Adopt-a-Lake in Florida
Hi Everyone,
I'm new here but wanted to share what our brand new organization is doing in Lake County Florida. A core group of four co-organizers have just started a new Atheists and Freethinkers group in South Lake County. We had all been members of Orlando Atheists and Freethinkers but wanted to meet closer to where we lived and also to be more actively involved in showing our local community that we are just regular people and not evil incarnate. We used the Meetup.com system and it works great for getting a quick start. We already have 15 members and we've only been organized a couple of weeks.
We've already started our first project. Our County has lots of lakes and just started an adopt-a-lake program where local organizations take on the responsibility of keeping a stretch of shoreline clean, monitoring water quality, etc. In return for this we will get good press in the local papers and a sign along our lake shore advertising South Lake Atheists and Freethinkers as the good guys keeping this lake clean. Our lake shore is especially good because it contains a heavily used park and bike path so we shoiuld have lots of visibility. This is a great opportunity to be civic minded, do something good for the environment and hopefully change some minds about how evil we are supposed to be.
BTW, I highly recommend the Meetup.com thing for starting new atheist groups. Anyone thinking of organizing should look into it.

This is a really terrific endeavor. Hope you will blog about it often. It's a real commitment to do something like this, and meeting that commitment is going to reflect really positively on your organization.
Meet up is a good tool for inviting and managing invitees to an event.
I hope you will also create a web site or a MySpace account where you will blog about your experience and raise your profile even further (include photos of volunteers in action!). I'm sure there are a lot of people out there that would love to join in this effort.
