5th Grader Math Question

This is a 5th grade math problem. This is not a trick question. This is a real math problem so don't say that a bus has no legs.

There are 7 girls in a bus

Each girl has 7 backpacks

In each backpack, there are 7 big cats

For every big cat there are 7 little cats

Question: How many legs are there in the bus?

The first person to get it correct gets a cookie. Sticking out tongue

7 girls x 2 legs per girl=

7 girls x 2 legs per girl= 14 legs of girls

7 girls x 7 backpacks=49 backpacks

1 backpack=7 big cats and 7 small cats(14 cats)

49 backpacks x 14 cats=686 cats

686 cats x 4 legs per cat=2744 legs of cats

2744 legs of cats+14 legs of girls=2758 total legs

2760 legs if there is a bus driver present

God I hope I get the cookie!

Assuming no bus driver and

Assuming no bus driver and no amputees, and that the cats (large and small) are with the girls in the bus:

10990 legs.

Little mistake there, it says for every big cat there will be 7 little cats, so it will be 7 x 7 + 7 = 56 cats per bag

56 cats x 49 backpacks = 2744 cats (I would question why these girls have so many cats...)

2744 cats x 4 legs per cat (assuming the girls arent maiming said cats) = 10976 cat legs

10976 unmaimed cat legs + 14 psycho girl legs = 10990 freaking legs on the crazy cat-carrying kids bus

Regardless... its a trick question.  The answer is god!  Praise Thor - King of all gods!

BURMA!

(I panicked.)

7 girls *2 legs/girl = 14 legs.

7 girls * 7 backpacks/girl = 49 backpacks.

49 backpacks * 7 big cats/backpack = 343 big cats.

343 big cats * 4 legs/cat = 1372 legs.

343 big cats * 7 little cats/big cat = 2401 little cats

2401 little cats * 4 legs/cat = 9604 legs.

Leg total: 14 for the girls + 1372 for the big cats + 9604 for the little cats = 10990 legs in the bus, per the information given.

How do you know none of the

How do you know none of the girls or cats is missing a leg or so? Each girl "has" 7 backpacks - does that mean has with or owns? Are there any boys or adults on the bus? What about anything non-living on the bus that has "legs" - ie table, chair, etc?

Doh!

Doh! I think my mind saw "there will be a little cat for every big cat, not 7 little cats." I'm doomed to repeat the 5th grade.

Standardized tests, anyone?

Sounds like something they would put on a standardized test, which in turn makes it a useless question

Or, summed up in one word:

Meh...

Human minds can make us see, or not see things that are right in front of our faces... thats why people DON'T believe in gods!

I couldnt even keep a straight face just typing that.

Yay cookie!

(Sure am glad I can still do 5th grade math.)

Another one: A raindrop

Another one:

A raindrop falls through a mist collecting mass as it falls. Assume that the drop remains spherical and the rate of acceleration is proportional to the cross-sectional area of the drop and the speed of the fall.

Find the acceleration of the drop if it started from rest and was infinitely small when it was released.

There's no such thing as

There's no such thing as "infinitely small." The smallest possible would be one molecule of water. Any smaller it would no longer be water.

All that means is that the radius/mass are negligible compared to the rate of change of mass/radius.

So you don't factor in the original mass/radius

legs

each girl = 2 legs

each backpack = 224 legs  x 7 backpacks = 1568 + 2 human legs = 1570 legs

1570 legs x 7 girls = 10,990 legs

Plus bus driver...?

Captain, the raindrop problem is not a 5th grade math question.

The answer is G/7 do I get cookie now?

How the hell is each little

How the hell is each little girl managing to carry 392 cats? That would make an interesting video!

Come to think of it where would you look it up in the first place?

I learned it, um, in Math 131 I think ...  Do I still get my cookie ?

You'd probably find it in physics or math textbooks I s'pose, it's a cool problem.

Seriously

Ok Seriously, some bad simple mistakes here... Of course I only read the first few replies so I don't know if someone got it right yet...

7 girls = 14 legs

-Each girl has 7 backpacks, so there are 49 backpacks total

-49 backpacks with 7 big cats = 343 big cats

-7 small cats for each of the 343 big cats = 2401

      -Small cats (2401) + Big cats (343) = 2744 cats total

        -Each cat has 4 legs, so 4 x 2744 cats = 10,976 legs

14 legs + 10,976 legs = 10,990 legs Total, 10,992 with driver (if there is one)

As the bus has not been said to have been moving or anything, it doesn't need a driver... the need for a driver is an assumption here. Therefore, my final answer is 10,990 legs
