I perceive her victory as

I also acknowledge Danica's victory as being newsworthy ( as it's a first )  but not particularly significant as it doesn't require having a penis to drive an indy car.  Certain occupations by their nature are gender neutral where both sexes can operate more or less on equal terms.

However, the first woman to bench press 500 lbs would qualify as a stupendous feat as it completely exceeds the typical limitations of the female gender ( and most men, as well ).  Yes, for that I would sit up and take notice.

I agree, it shouldn't be newsworthy. If all pro car races were 50-50 you would see women win more often. In the end it was here skill that got her into the pros, and her skill won her the race. It is newsworthy because we still live in a sexist society.

Danica

I think part of the newsworthyness is that she is a female and she is not only attractive, but good as well. Not everyone was all that impressed with Martina Navratilova, but Anna Kournikova comes along and is incredibly famous and everywhere in the news. She was a b- level player, but she was hot, and that got her the news attention.

I do think this race is significant when you have a woman break into a fairly chauvinist, male-dominated sport where women have never been a part of the sport. That being said, things like the WNBA are incredibly boring because they are not gender neutral. Most cannot jam, their games are low scoring, the players are unattractive, and the talent ratio when compared to the NBA or elite NCAA mens teams is not even close.

When women can break into gender neutral sports it is just another step in a long journey of getting misogynist mentalities to recognize that women can be equal to men in things that don't require higher testosterone levels to succeed. For that reason it is significant, but only in a greater cumulative sense.
