Ayaan Hirsi Ali and the American Enterprise Institute?????????
I was not aware that Ayaan Hirsi Ali was a resident fellow at the AEI. The AEI is a right wing think tank run by theocons. The president of AEI, Christopher DeMuth co-authored a book called:
Religion and the American Future.
Here is a synopsis:
"Religious belief is thriving in America today, even though it seems under assault as seldom before--attacked by secularists, scientists, and increasingly vocal atheists; constrained by judges and civil libertarians; mocked by contemporary artists; and treated pragmatically, if not cynically, by politicians seeking votes. This book explores the enduring strength of religion in American life. Faith and religious observance are not obsolete or incompatible with modern society; on the contrary, the religious principles that guided the Founders continue to bind the nation and justify human endeavor."
Now I'm wondering whether Ali knows this and is complicit in this type of American mentality, or is she being exploited?
The hypocrisy here is that Ali is an ATHEIST, completely antithetical to the values of the AEI, with the exception of her anti-islamic sentiment. Christians in this country will be the first to speak out against islam, and use any vocal critic of islam for their advantage. But the esoteric message here is that Islam is a threat to christianity, NOT that islam is a threat to humanity. Christian leaders in this country can give two shits about the atrocities committed by islam, yet they will use them as a means to spread their own bigoted ideas that are espoused throughout christianity and the bible.
I am very disappointed to find Ayaan Hirsi Ali as a fellow at the AEI. VERY DISAPPOINTED.

That is fucked up. Almost like the US supporting mideast terrorists and corrupt dictators in the 1980's because they were anti-communist. Look how well that worked out.

This bothers me.
How long has it been since Ali jumped the boat on Islam?
This is very old news indeed. I think it a shame too, but it has been this way for a long time. She left Holland because she didn't feel safe there after Theo Van Gogh was murdered, which one can hardly blame her.
But she was also annoyed with the Dutch society's lack of conviction in condemning Islam, and felt that their agenda of Multiculturalism was playing into the extremist's hands. So she went to America, hopping to find somewhere where it was more acceptable to openly condemn Islam.
And wher will she find that, other than in the neocon camp?
It's a shame, and I think she is now herself playing into some other extremist's hands, but one can understand her motivations to a large extent, and she has done a fairly good job of defending her choice. I don't think we have to worry about her being born again any time soon at least. And remember that some of her best friends, like Sam Harris, has publicly expressed concern for her choice of allies, so we can only hope that she is confronted, in private conversation, with the potential dangers of allying with the neocons. She is a smart women, after all. I think her choice of allies, in this context is a political choice, not an ideological one.
And if I'm wrong, then we can console ourselves with the knowledge, that unlike fundies, we don't blindly worship "our" spokespeople, and if she says and does things I don't support, then it's no stone off my back; I don't have to agree with her.
Well I was born an original sinner
I was spawned from original sin
And if I had a dollar bill for all the things I've done
There'd be a mountain of money piled up to my chin
Maybe she's working to take 'em down from the inside?
Boo-yah.
One can only hope Kevin.
She certainly seems to be very outspoken and un-appoligetic (sometimes you can really tell I'm a foreigner from my spelling can't you?) about her atheism, so if any of her new "friends" in the whatcha-ma-call-it-institute have tried talking religion about their religion with her, I don't think she has been holding back.
But I think they have been smart enough to avoid that. She doesn't seem very concerned with western religiousity at all. Her first experience with people who call themselves Christians have been from the University community of Holland. And my impression is, that it is like here in Denmark. People don't concern themselves with religious dogma at all, but many of us (yes us, myself included) call ourselves christians for cultural reasons. We are babtised and get married and burried in churches, and we celebrate Christmas, but we don't believe any of the historical or scientific things that the bible talks about, and we certainly don't think God is real. It's just a word. A metaphor.
Perhaps she naively believes that the people she knows in the US are the same. They just call themselves Christians, the same way they call themselves US citizens: as a cultural marker, but they don't actually believe anything supernatural.

That's what concerns me.
They're every bit as dangerous as muslims - just in a different way. If she's letting her guard down because she thinks those dogs are friendlier, she's asking to get bitten.
I guess I just don't see why she didn't nestle-in with a secular group instead. There's plenty around.

Well from reading her books and interviews she is definityle now a politican . There is nothing wrong with that in itself but her prime concern is fighting Islam and its associated culture everything else seems pretty secondary. So she has choosen allies that she thinks will help her do this
In doing so, she is helping the xtian right in this country. That is the problem. I know that Christopher Hitchens is a neocon as well. The neocons are in bed with the xtian right...and use anti islamic rhetoric to get the xtian (and jewish) votes (AIPAC also is in bed with AEI). No matter how much I agree with their anti islamic views, I find it difficult to swallow that they are doing so in order to promote xtianity. I understand that Ayan is speaking against Islam and it's atrocities but to do so through an organization that promotes the merger of church and state and Intelligent Design in this country to me seems counter to being an Atheist, after all Islamic societies promote just that. If you're an atheist, why would you work for an organization that bashes one religion while promoting another? The AEI disguises itself as the pro democratic think tank, but in essence if you look at it's members, it is comprised of people like Irving Kristol and Paul Wolfowitz. This is a dangerous move for atheists to align themselves with these people. These are the people we are in essence speaking out against. This is why I found this surprising and sad.
I'm afraid it may hurt the credibility of the movement.

and she is obviously a very brave and intelligent woman but a very poor role model for atheism. It really wouldnt suprise me if she came out as a Christian one of these days.
Has she taken part in any anti christian fundamentalist organisatations or solely concentrating on Islam. The national Dutch christian churches are not a threat to science or human progress the Americans ones are in my opinion a far bigger threat than islam.
Christopher Hitchens a neo con, hmm probably a bit more complicated than that I pretty sure he still considers himself to be on the 'left'while his brother a religious nut who openly far right is also very against the Iraq and Iran wars
So write her a letter. I mean we all agree with you here. And maybe she just doesn't know that they are crazy fundies, or don't see their fundementalism as a problem. Maybe all she needs is a letter from a concerned fellow atheist pointing this out to her.

perhaps that would be good. I think I will.
