Hello
Hi Ya'll,
I was just looking around in here and realized I hadn't done the 'introduction' thing. Here goes.
My childhood was riddled with church activities...we're talking a 'Wednesday night and twice on Sunday' kind of childhood. I went to music programs, traveling preacher programs, potluck dinners, youth retreats...even hand-raising church camps some summers. I never thought it made sense...even though I played along. I argued quite often that 'god didn't want me to wear pantyhose' and 'god can hang out with me in the woods'. I was always answered with sentences packed with talk of faith and fellowship and what god wanted me to do. Even when I asked questions about real-life issues I was met with god talk.
I'm happy to say that I escaped mostly intact...and here I am! I'm 36, broke, happy, and educating myself in the ways of Rationality.
Pleased to meet you!

Welcome!Yay new people.
You'll find alot of us had very religious upbringings.Yours sounds rather like mine, except I wholly bought into it.I guess as long as you get out in the end that's what matters.
Sure you'll enjoy it here.Every day is a chance for new learning.
Psalm 14:1 "the fool hath said in his heart there is a God"-From a 1763 misprinted edition of the bible
Argument from Sadism: Theist presents argument in a wall of text with no punctuation and wrong spelling. Atheist cannot read and is forced to concede.
Welcome to the hizzle.
My hood was also riddled with church bullets, errrrr I mean activities.
Did you ever have to endure vacation bible school ? Is that what your summer camps were ? When I was little, I never understood how any adult could think of putting the words vacation and bible in the same phrase, whether side by side or not.
Oh crap, I just did it....and twice!
Welcome to the forums
Yes, I attended those summer weeks of Jesus crafts, too!
I remember lots of kool-aid and popcicle sticks...oh, and Jesus.
(my brother is a Fireman)
Glad to have you here instead of there. Lots of confusing & eductional, topics here. I have noticed these guys love their graphs and charts. It's a lot of fun though.
I never went to camps or anything but I went to that Vacation Bible School a couple years (my choice - I asked my parents to be able to go.)

Oh yes, dixie cups and those yummy pitchers of kool-aid.
One blazing summer day I recall an instructor telling us to go out and "gather 'round the sycamore". She was thinking none of us would know what that meant but I immediately piped up that there was no such tree out there. Dumbfounded she took a few moments to compose herself and the best she came up with was, "Well, you know how to pretend, don't you?" To which I replied, "Well yeah, that's what I thought we've been doing here all week."
Needless to say, we went out under a large tree, ate our cookie and slurped our drinks. Toward the end I got the lecture of my religious life when I was pulled aside by the pastor and his wife who were actually called on the phone to come over to the church, from their farm about two miles away, and deal with me.
It's so funny to me now. But I never made comments like that again after the lecture. It was pure hell.
That's is so hilarious, I laughed good and hard with that one. Thanks!! I wish more kids would do just that, stand up for reason, but I guess I can't expect the children to that, since I as a child couldn't do it either. I was forced to go along with the pack.
Welcome to the forums, Porkchop!
What's the story behind your pic? Do you mine or are you a spelunker?

I would love to be a spelunker, alas, I am a photographer that dug a hole for a post.
I just couldn't pass up the photographic opportunity.
Thanks to everyone for making a girl feel welcome.

Welcome! My name's Will - I make the martinis. Olive or twist?
Tsk I would expect anyone worth his salt in making martinis to also include the Gibson martini....with a small onion.
For you, my friend, anything. Para mí, donde hay hambre, no hay pan duro. But for the more discerning palette, nous avons beaucoup de choix.

And, for the record, HisWillness-- Olive.
Welcome to the forums!
Never did Bible school myself - we weren't encouraged to read the book.
Oh dayum - the new picture of Kathy. An unbelievably beautiful woman. Your husband is a very lucky man.

Who me? pfft. I figured I'd change my pic because I just got my hair hacked off...wanted to stay current. Thanks for the compliment!
Mmmm Pork chops.... *grawgllllrrr....*
Some body had to do it >.>
I think it's a well-known and documented fact that atheists are just hotter. That's science. You can't argue with science.

Excellent choice. Only the finest for friends.

I favor the appletini's, delicious little cocktail. Several clubs in town make them too strong, so I prefer to make them at home instead. I guess I'm a cheap drunk, huh!!
You folks are fun!
I love me some Homer...pork chops, too, for that matter.
Yes, I think Atheists are definitely hotter.
You can spank me any day...

All right Will, my opinion of you is really on the line, here: what's your gin?

maybe if this sig is witty, someone will love me.
Hendrick's, my good man. Small batches; made in Scotland; delicious.

Signature ? How ?
I don't know, really.
I always felt like the whole deal was contrary to itself. So as I grew up, I moved to a position of disliking Organized Religion. Then I just slowly pulled away from that altogether.
Sometimes those ingrained thoughts still creep up, I think. I'll say things that are just reflex. (of course, I cannot think of an example at the moment) Then, I think about it and retract or revise my statement as necessary. I hate that those slips still happen from time to time. However, I feel good about the times I catch myself and correct it.
Have you ever listen to FFRF. Dan Barker was a minister, who seen thru the Bull ,and became a born again Pagan. His podcast files are filled with "Victims of religion"
Signature ? How ?
I'll check it out. Thanks.
With all due respect to Hendricks, which is a fine gin, I'm going to have to go with Miller's.
There are very few things better on a summer day than a Miller's and Tonic. One of the things that's better is multiple Miller's and Tonics.

I will take that under advisement, Hambydammit. Thanks.

Hey, you ever had Boodle's? Give it a whirl if presented the opportunity. British, quite excellent.
