Stop loss has been around

Stop loss has been around for decades.  In the past it has been used rarely, primarily because we had a draft until after the Vietnam War.  When I was released from service I was told that I was still on the hook should the government deem it necessary, essentially telling me my life was not my own anymore.

The historicity of neo-slavery has always been there, it just wasn't looked at by society as a form of slavery.  It has always been presented as Southern repression and racism, and in the past thirty years or so as institutional racism.  Blackmon is not reporting something new, he is putting it together in new packaging to sell his book. Don't get me wrong, I agree with the overall premise of his book that blacks were and, to some degree, are still the victim of repression and definitely of racism in the US.

Disparities in income among minorities (this includes women) still exists and undoubtedly will continue to exist for many decades to come.  Hiring practices, promotions, housing, the law, economics, all of it is geared toward repression in one way or another.  This is not to say individual efforts cannot succeed in overcoming insitutional racism, it just makes it a lot harder for most and impossible for some. Until ignorance, much of it borne of religion, can be eliminated and overcome, these things will continue.  Until ethics and concern for the overall health of society become the norm we will never become the truly great nation the Founding Fathers envisioned.

None of this is and may never be taught in primary education.  The idea of education through high school is to prepare kids for careers in the workforce.  Secondary education is where this kind of information can be learned.  Curriculum in history and the social sciences in high school is geared only to give kids a basic overview of the US and give them a positive overview of our country and its government.  Having said that, I have always said that education is slanted and innaccurate and full of lies and deceptions, just like the bible.

History and political science in high school is taught in the most boring ways possible, I think, to discourage any real interest in it.  Misinformation in this country rules the day because it is expedient to the government.  Imagine if all of us had known that our vote in the presidential elections have never meant a damned thing.  We don't elect the president, the politicians do that, we have only been given the illusion that what we want is relevant.

There is much that could and should be taught in primary education and much that needs to be re-written to accurately reflect the real history of this country and the world.  Unfortunately, there is so much information that including it in the curriculum would probably lengthen the amount of time needed to learn it all.

"Erecting the 'wall of separation between church and state,' therefore, is absolutely essential in a free society." Thomas Jefferson

Yes, one man (person), one vote, means nil, zilch, nada, when it comes to electing arguably the most important person in the United States.

Thanks Ken for sharing.

Stop Loss has been

.  Bulldog wrote that stop loss has been around for decades,Well I don't know when it was started, but it was new to me,and a whole lot of our troops are surprised when a week before they're ready too return back home to see their family, then the CO gives them yet another deployment say in Afghanistan, and the soldier is stuck overseas, and left wondering, about how the Military does not live up to there end of the bargain. And as far as education goes concerning History/Politics I would recommend "HOWARD ZINN" great book "A People's History of the United States"and "Noam Chomsky" book "Manufacturing Consent"and "Necessary Illusions" and "Understanding Power"these books are a must read no matter what level of education you have. The Free Library is the best sourse for most infomation, in my opinon.    PS-Thanks for the info. and your MY Space web page is "cool"
