Deaths from knife attacks on increase in London
It appears that London is experiencing a surge of homicidal violence. Instead of dying from bullets people are dying from being stabbed. According to the AP article there has been a major upswing in this type of attack with twelve stabbing deaths in a single week and with six of the victims being youths.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown stated "Too many people, young and old, do not feel safe in the streets, and sometimes even in their homes, " Legislators have pledged 100 million pounds in funding as well proposing new laws to combat the growing problem.

Usual media bullshit, the murder rate hasnt changed by any signficant amount in 40 years. The only time there was a lowering in crime was between the 2 world wars due to the highly efficient method of getting all your young men killed in the trenches.
Talking about a mandatory 3 year jail sentence for anyone possessing a knife without legitimate purpose which while I agree with the sentiment isnt very flexible (I disagree with mandatory life sentences for murder too)
Not sure where you're getting your figures from, but Govt. figure (which generally play down violent crime) show a distinc rise since the 60's with a spike from '80's to '91.

Whilst it has shown a decline from '91 until now it's getting back up there, I'd make the leap that the rise in immigration from Eastern Europe and ME has a lot to do with it. I could probably find something to bear that out if I could be bothered.

I actually am somewhat of an expert on knife fighting. I have several fighting knives, a Chinese machete, nuchaku and a shuriken. I have books on real knife fighting (including one used by the US Marines) and practice nearly every day. They'd be in for an unpleasant surprise (most people carrying knives have no idea how to use them and only win by stabbing unarmed people.)

Interesting Matt. I'm somewhat surprised by your devotion in learning how to use knives as lethal weapons given your avid support of gun control. You'd still be out of luck in London though ( if you chose to obey the law ) as the current penalty for carrying a knife in public is up to two years in jail.

It's not just London but all the major cities and connurbations that are experiencing this trend. I'm sure the media has hyped the stats. In Manchester we've been experiencing knife and gun crime for quite a few years. I myself have been robbed at knife point. But generally I feel safe around here. A mile up the road in Moss Side probably less so.
Actually the Eastern European and Middle Eastern immigrants rarely have anything to do with this sort of crime. Most of it seems to involve the disadvantaged youths of the inner city who are primarily black, white or from the sub-continent. In other words these people are at least second or third generation. Most Eastern Europeans come here to work, and even when they are exploited by ruthless bosses, they rarely turn to criminal activity.

Not sure gangs in London or anywhere in the UK are really all that theistic. They're probably not explicitly atheist either. They're just morons without a real opinion on metaphysics. Having said that a lot of these guys are black, and are most likely from religious families, even if they are insanely nihilistic.

I've never been across the Atlantic, so I have no idea about how things are over there, but I have seen a movie that sort of fits your description of how things are called "This Is England". It was moving, and a little disgusting. The tough guy in the movie was Tommy from Snatch, thats how I heard of it.
I haven't seen This Is England, but I've heard it's set in the 80s. I suppose things haven't changed all that much. I guess in the 80s a lot of the violence was politically motivated and in my view justifyable given the tyrannical Thatcher-ator in power at the time. These days it certainly isn't politically motivated, but is instead a result of boredom and family break down.
I wouldn't get your information on a country from films. Although if you wanna know what it's really like then British film companies like Working Title normally give the most realistic portrayals. Most people don't live like they do in Notting Hill or Pride and Prejudice or Bridget Jones, even the middle classes. Of course those kinds of people exist but they're a minority. If you really wanna know what it's like then live here.

This spike in violence has been labelled an 'epidemic' which is sweeping the country, with specific attention being paid to 18 London teenagers killed in the past year.
- In a city with a population of 7.3 million there's no way you can use 'epidemic' or equivalent words to describe the deaths of 18 people in a year. Except that's what the media are doing when talking about the deaths of these teenagers. At less than one thousandth of a percent of the population the number is statistically insignificant. If they were using full stats for knife crime in Britain and not just London I'd be more inclined to belive the language.
- The media focus is always on the teenage killings. If you're killed by a knife but you're not in one of the sympathy brackets of child, teenager or oap then you're off the media love list.
Any death by violent means is tragic. I just wish the media would actually report the news i.e. an accurate and balanced report on what's going on, rather than this hyped sympathy machine that focuses on the 'tragedy' of the preferential that skews perspective without worrying about facts.
