i fucking hate the eagles
there, i said it.
don't get me wrong, they're all very talented musicians. i just can't stand their music. i find it tinny, pretentious, and downright limp-wristed (especially henley).
in fact, i hate country rock in general. another irritating group for me is the nitty gritty dirt band.
the reason i'm venting is because i'm in a country band and all my bandmates love the eagles. they compare everything to them. and i don't have the heart to tell these guys i think the eagles fucking blow. worst part is, now they've insisted we do "take it easy." and i'm the lead singer. which means i have to be fucking glenn frey. at least it's not henley, but i'm used to singing waylon jennings, merle haggard, johnny cash, get my drift? i'm a fucking BARITONE singer, and all the members of the eagles have NO BALLS. every night after practice my voice is shot. it just doesn't GO there, goddammit!
thanks for listening.
"I have never felt comfortable around people who talk about their feelings for Jesus, or any other deity for that matter, because they are usually none too bright. . . . Or maybe 'stupid' is a better way of saying it; but I have never seen much point in getting heavy with either stupid people or Jesus freaks, just as long as they don't bother me. In a world as weird and cruel as this one we have made for ourselves, I figure anybody who can find peace and personal happiness without ripping off somebody else deserves to be left alone. They will not inherit the earth, but then neither will I. . . . And I have learned to live, as it were, with the idea that I will never find peace and happiness, either. But as long as I know there's a pretty good chance I can get my hands on either one of them every once in a while, I do the best I can between high spots."

You are lead singer in your band, you sing baritone, yet your band mates expect you to sing what "saprano" next ?? What's up with that ? Baritone is sexy, however if a guy can get his voice up there, some women just love the higher pitch.
I enjoy more new country myself, Brad Paisley, Tobey Keith, Deiks Bently ... just to name a few.
And here I thought we were going to talk football !
I was a little kid in the '70s when they were popular. When they would play them on the radio and say it was a song by "the Eagles" I actually thought it was the football team singing (they are the "local" NFL team here - Philly is the closest city with a team. ) I pictured them in full uniforms, helmets, etc singing.

That is good Matt, I"m laughing right along with ya.
Do the Jackson Browne version of Take It Easy. He co-wrote the song, actually released it before the Eagles, and it's the far superior version.
well, i can get it to frey's level, more or less, but it tends to waver, and after practising that for about 3 hours, my voice is in shambles.
i'm not big on new country. it's too pop-ish. i think these days bob dylan is more of a country singer than half the stuff on country radio. tobey is all right, but i find his post-2001 stuff to be way too contrived. i respect paisley, especially since i saw him upstage that little prick john mayer when they performed together.
outlaw country has always been my ideal, as well as all the old school guys (george jones, conway twitty, kris kristofferson, ray price, etc.). of the newer guys, i love marty stuart and travis tritt. rodney crowell is pretty good too.
i can't fucking stand alan jackson, kenny chesney, or keith urban.

Just exactly how much are your band mates toking? Seriously. To go from Merle Haggard to the Eagles . . . I feel your pain.
"I am that I am." - Proof that the writers of the bible were beyond stoned.
You know, this is a funny thing. When I used to live in Alabama, I really liked the Eagles. Somewhere along I-85, heading out of the deep south and up the east coast, I developed a feeling a lot like an ulcer whenever the Eagles came on the radio. The only thing I can figure out is that Alabama is about 20 years behind the rest of the modern world, and so are the Eagles. There must have been some kind of strange symbiosis I was experiencing with the deep south. I dunno. Odd that such a thing would happen with a bunch of California hippies...
They were a great band in their time, but I feel like their music hasn't held up as well as Led Zepplin or The Rolling Stones.
Oh, and I hate Jackson Browne.

Arguing about music is very subjective. People listen to all sorts of ordinary or actually rather good music they would give their lives for, but not me. I've got my brain programmed to certain tones, music patterns, frequencies, degree of complexity, and so on, which gives me pleasure, when sound becomes pure, extatic endorphine and I flow in a sea of blissful awareness. (that's also a name of a Shpongle track) Searching for more of this stuff is one of my hobbies and basic needs. But does it have much sense to shove this wonder down anyone's ears? Of course, a few links here and there can't hurt.
Complaining about country music is like complaining about one particular raindrop, that it's wet, when it rains around. I revere amost all artists, because making a music is an amazing ability and is fully approved by my creed, but if I could make it myself... I'd probably get not much money from a mainstream listener community. Too much demands on listener's timeless hippieness.
Well, I like country music, if the lyrics are funny or bawdy... this is what country music lyrics are supposed to be Otherwise, to like this genre as such for what it always is, it would need a few generations of my ancestors to smoke a blue grass, drink moonshine and procreate in a colonist wagon. If I'd be an american, my ancestors would be those, who always watched out for Indians.

I am glad you were talking about the band and not the NFL team because there is a core founder here who would go all "Al Quida" on you if you dissed the Eagles NFL team.

Hahah Brian, I opened this thread thinking it was about the NFL team. I was planning on coming in here talking about how great the cowboys are going to be this year....
As for The Eagles, the band. I love them.
So "take it easy" on that band. They help me reach a 'peaceful easy feeling' ... mess with my Eagles and I become a 'witchy woman'

My $0.02: I doubt that I'm as big of an Eagles fan as you, Renee...but I still like them. Huh...funny thing...almost all of the pop culture that I think is fun is mercelessly trashed by the professional critics. (I mean, really, when was the last time that you heard of the Carpenters, Chicago, or the Doobie Brothers getting a *good* review?) Worse...I've tried giving a chance to various artists (not just musicians, either) who were recommended by various critics...and I didn't enjoy the experience. For instance, I'm a fan of DC Comics (...you know...Superman, Batman, etc.,) but I don't like the story of "Watchmen." I just find it depressing.
Ah, well...maybe someday I'll be enlightened and see what everyone else seems to be seeing. But until then, the critics can go fly a kite.

I certainly don't hate Jackson Browne, but I get that. His records typically consist of 1 or 2 great songs and a ton of filler. He's the kind of guy that could put together a really awesome 45 minute greatest hits record (which I'm sure has been done, I just don't buy greatest hits records).
If Late for the Sky was the only song he ever wrote, he'd have still been a legend in my book.
I don't like the Eagles either, almost all their stuff is bland cheesy whack sauce, but Hotel California is different. It's a slice of pure goodness, topped with a sprinkling of awesome.
Wish in one hand, shit in the other, see which one fills up first.
Hate the NFL Eagles, despise the band The Eagles, do appreciate the Bald Eagle and other feathered eagle varieties.
Hail to the Redskins!

wow, you nailed the one i hate the most. probably because i hear that one more than any other, and, here in europe anyway, every kid in a guitar store with ambition to be a lead guitarist starts playing that goddamn solo.
also, in college i got sick of every stoned kid trying to "interpret" that song. it's not "deep." any song that makes that conscious an effort to be cryptic is not "deep": it just doesn't make any fucking sense. same thing with "american pie." the reason why the songwriters are so determined not to tell anyone what those kind of songs mean is because they mean nothing.
that's why i respect bob dylan. he's almost belligerent when people ask him what his songs "mean." he usually gives an answer like, "i don't know what the fuck it means, i just write the fuckin' things. you fuckin' guys'll write all kindsa shit about what it means but i don't have a fuckin' clue. who cares?"

I am so fucking with you...I would rather listen to crack babies scream than this awful country/rock band. Hotel California might be the most played out song in contemporary music history....every time I hear it I have to fight my instincts to commit homicide.

Another Redskin fan who is an atheist? THERE IS A GOD......... now we have to find a confessional to actually admit we are fans. But if there is a God, why haven't all my prayers to strike down their crappy owner in Danny boy been answered? The only thing I can come up with is that God is a dick. If he was all loving we would still have the Hogs.

Maybe the Native American gods are real and the name pisses them off?
Can't stand the Eagles. Can't stand country rock. Can't stand country music, period.
( ....the band known as Tesla is about as country as I can get. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x16ukc_tesla-love-song_fun )
That would piss the "Christian Nation" fans off. The settlers(*cough cough) invaders certainly considered the rights of the people on the land they stole it from. Jesus had a plan and anyone who didn't live in a colonial style house and lived in a tent was a savage. Besides, we had muskets they had arrows. It is Native American's fault they didn't discover nuclear weapons.

Hotel California rules. The fact that it gets played a lot is irrelevant to it's quality as a song.
On the topic of country rock, if you guys want to hear some of the real stuff, go pick up The Gilded Palace of Sin by The Flying Burrito Bros., as well as Gram Parsons' first few solo records. Gram and Co. make the Eagles sound silly.
