It was forcast that it would be at least a cat. 3 once it approached the coast north, but it is a cat. 4 NOW.
When I went to bed about 2:30 it was only cat. 1. 6 hours later it was a 3! It practically doubled in wind speed.
I think this could easily be a 5 by the time it hits land.
People who think there is something they refer to as god don't ask enough questions.

This one looks even worse than Katrina. Of course the results shouldn't be near as bad as they have more of a clue about whats coming and also the fact that a lot of people never came back and buildings never got repaired in the first place.

It looks like cuba didn't slow it down much. It's still a very strong cat4 and it still has the gulf to go through, which will only strengthen it.

Overnight, Hurricane Gustav's winds decreased enough to make the storm a Category 3. But the 8 am ET NHC advisory says it could restrengthen in the next 24 hours.
It's not as easy as assuming that the gulf provides warm water and the storm is bound to intensify. Cold water currents can run side by side with warm water currents, depending on the path that the storm travels it could decrease in speed even traveling towards the equator, and if it caught the right patch of the Atlantic, it could increase all the way up to NYC. I'll look for a water temperature map and post it.

After the failure of FEMA of relying on a privatized group with no disaster experience I'm certain they have cleaned up their act. America has experienced a couple large disasters following Katrina and have acted with the utmost competence. They are prepared this time and Gov. Jindal has left the GOP Klan convention and is attending to matters in his state to prepare for the worst. Things should go smoothly this time.
Here's the Gulf of Mexico, as you can see, colder currents can be seen both north and south of warm currents, and vice versa.

As of 1 p.m. CDT, Gustav was centered about 270 miles southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River, moving northwest at 17 mph.

Hurricane Gustav has continued a weakening trend that began earlier today. As of 1 pm CDT top winds were down to near 115 mph. Even though it is slightly weaker, Gustav is still and dangerous category 3 hurricane and some strengthening is possible before it makes landfall along the Louisiana coast Monday.
