I'm concerned for my intellect

Hello! I'm new to this forum, and I need your corroborations

Lately I grew concerned for my mental development. I'm going to add a few background details about myself:

I was born to an orthodox Jewish family and brought up that way. By the age of 13 I started questioning my faith, much to my parents' horror. My path to atheism was long and delicate. First I saw myself as a believer in a nonpersonal god, before finally understanding (with help from a dear friend) the divine truth - there is no god. I was about fifteen then, today I'm sixteen.

I came here to resolve whether or not I'm mentally gifted. I've always seen myself as somewhat mentally superior to my peers, as I find most of them dull and stupid. I lived in the US for two years during my childhood, but now I maintain my English mainly by reading English literature and speaking English to my family. In an intelligence test carried out by a professionalist a few months ago, I scored rather poorly in the logical-mathematical area, but extremely high in verbal-linguistic fields. Indeed, I'm a man of words. My hobbies are plastic arts, books, and languages. I'm currently studying German.

To make a long story short, I'm having thoughts recently that I'm not gifted. Did it ever occur to you during your adolescence that you might be less intelligent then you esteemed yourself so far?

Welcome to the forums. You

Welcome to the forums.

You seem to be a very bright young man.   You scored lower in mathmatical abilities but did well with verbal-linguistic fields.  You seem like myself in that regard.  I have always been a creative person and was an art major in college.  Artistic self-expression comes relatively easy for me.  it's just the way my mind works.  But, put me in a position where I have to deal with mathmatical concepts and I am an idiot.

By contrast, my older brother is extremely gifted in math, he took accelerated math classes in highschool, was an accounting major in college, became a CPA, etc.  He can do algebra in his head and I can't even do it on paper.

But in a general sense he is not significantly any more intelligent than myself.  We are just gifted in different areas.

Just make the most of your abilities; depending upon the area of expertise you will always be better than some and worse than others.  Don't worry about whether you'll be accepted into Mensa or if you are a modern day Einstein.

That's very interesting. If you're 16, that means you still live with your parents, I presume? Do they know you are an atheist? I ask because I was born into an atheistic Jewish family, and we didn't know many Orthodox Jews.

"Physical reality” isn’t some arbitrary demarcation. It is defined in terms of what we can systematically investigate, directly or not, by means of our senses. It is preposterous to assert that the process of systematic scientific reasoning arbitrarily excludes “non-physical explanations” because the very notion of “non-physical explanation” is contradictory.

Yes, I still live with my

Yes, I still live with my parents. They know I'm an atheist.

The theological debates between us are rather shallow and pointless. They keep saying things like, "Faith has nothing to do with rational" and "You're too young for spiritually". They ignore all other arguments.

Well, I realize faith isn't derived from rational observing, but how can they justify their believe of a consciousness creator? "It's a deep feeling". When I try to point out that the bible does not portray modern science consepts such as evolution, I get "The bible shouldn't be understood literally". Why do you follow your religion so blindly? "Because that's my heritage", and so on. They are both very educated people, both with doctor's degree, physics (father) and literature (mother). However, their spiritual stands are not very progressive as you can see.

We live in Israel.

I agree with them, and I chose to be rational over faith.

Welcome to RRS.

Based on your control of diction and grammar, if you're 16 years old, then you're definitely pretty intelligent, especially if English wasn't your first language. Most of the 16 year olds in my high school couldn't form a compound sentence.

 That's pretty typical.

Our revels now are ended. These our actors, | As I foretold you, were all spirits, and | Are melted into air, into thin air; | And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, | The cloud-capped towers, the gorgeous palaces, | The solemn temples, the great globe itself, - Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve, | And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, | Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff | As dreams are made on, and our little life | Is rounded with a sleep. - Shakespeare

There are different kinds of

There are different kinds of giftedness, not just math and logic based. There is physical giftedness, visual, aural, interpersonal, etc. The idea that there is only one kind of intelligence has pretty much become passe. Find a good book on giftedness, or better yet find a professional who deals specifically with giftedness. If you're bored in school, that's a major sign.

From your brief description, I would not be surprised if you have a giftedness with language. But I'm not a professional, so don't take my word for it. Even if you're not 'officially' gifted, whatever that is, you may be borderline, aka bright, and encounter a lot of the same problems. Don't worry so much about labels. Learn as much as you can about it.

I too have a terrible time

I too have a terrible time with math and I would probably fail a high school math test. While my linguistic skills are not spectacular, I have never had problems being understood. I have a very small flair for writing but my lack of creativity impedes my ability to put my own words on paper. I have been told that I am a good technical writer by a professional technical writer even though I've never had any formal education in that field.

You just need to find something you enjoy and are really good at and focus all your talent on that. For me it was Information Tech. I, along with a few others, helped build and deploy the version of the site you see today. While it may not be incredibly pretty, it is worlds better than the previous site.

Not exactly. Actually, it was around my adolescence that I started participating in discussions on religion and politics. I was constantly praised for my intellect at the time(perhaps in part because I constantly asked questions that people couldn't answer, and to another part that I was very good at getting a grip on something once I'd learned it). It took me a couple of years of adulthood to destroy the ego that was built as a result of so many compliments(ie: everyone is stupid, except me), once it became clear to me that I didn't know everything, or anything, better than a random other person. I had to normalize myself, if that's a word, before I could appreciate my own intellect compared to others. I ended up accepting that everyone is different to a point that noone can truly appreciate. I am by no means a great scientist, but I have never met or even heard of someone who can read faster and more comprehensively than myself. It occurred to me that everyone had their own strengths and weaknesses which may make them appear smart or stupid under certain circumstances, when such was not the case on average.

I don't know if this will help or confuse you. > >

Really. Everyone has

Really. Everyone has something they're good at.

Edgar Degas was good at creating works of art,  Stephen Hawking was good at theoretical physics, Jeffrey Dahmer was good at eating people.....it's just a matter of finding your niche.

You are still indoctrinated

You are still indoctrinated into theistic use of language. "Gifted" is a mythological word to explain away your genetic luck(randomness)

People are good at some things and not so good at others. Do not mesure yourself by what you cant do, there is pleanty you cant do. Mesure yourself by what you can do, and it is not a gift, it is simply what you have adapted to.

The bullshit remark I get from well off people is, " If you are so smart, why arnt you rich"(a point Bob Spence, fourm member pointed out to me)

I know poor people who can rebuild car engine and rich people who cant change their oil. Being able to do, or not being able to do, certain things doesn't make you a retard anymore than it makes you gifted. "Gifted" is a theistic word whereas rationalists would simply call it "lucky" or " random.

Your style of writing puts you ahead of most humans on this planet as far as education, but that wont mean that you wont die from a desease or you wont get hit by a bus tommorow, or that you wont win the lottery tommorow.

You are focusing on your hits and ignoring the misses. OF COURSE there will be people smarter than you, not only in your field, but outside that field as well,

My assesment is that if you can articulate like you have, even if you never get past minimum wage where you live, you are still doing better than most of the world's population that is uneducated and lives in poverty. Consider yourself lucky to have what you have.
