Here in Florida...

Hullo, Everyone!

I've been in Florida since Sunday the second.  I'm a bit sunned out after Fort Lauderdale, but I've been having a good time.  It was wonderful to see Obama win Tuesday night.  Now I'm in Tampa.  Other than the heat and the water, I'm kind of disappointed by both cities, but come the weekend we'll see if I change my opinion.

Things certainly went better following the election than I had envisioned, but then with an Obama win I suspected there would be celebrations... just not the huge ones there were.

The media is rather annoying going on about him proving himself after only just winning and I understand that there is a lengthy four month wait before he takes charge in the most meaningful ways.  So, now that some people's doomsday has passed and without the predicted doom, what happens now?

Actually, it's only a bit

Actually, it's only a bit over 2 months until he takes office. I still think a chimp could do better than Bush, but Obama was the best off all candidates that had a chance (Nader actually comes closest to my views of any candidate but he'd never win. )

Welcome to Florida.

Welcome to Florida.

Tampa/St. Pete can be a lot of fun especially St Pete Beach. Night time action go to Ybor City. I live in Orlando where Disney and Universal dominate the scene though I don't go there often every 5 years or so. Disney used to have Pleasure Island but they closed it earlier this year after 18 years probably due to competition from Universal's City Walk.

As to what's next for Obama he needs to put together his transition team and decide who will be in his cabinet etc. He replaces George the mindless one on January 20th. George still has time to muck up more before he's gone. Obama is now learning all of the hidden shit George keeps under the carpet out of sight. Obama can make his plans but can't really do anything until he is officially President in January. The media is just a machine that runs constantly spitting out continuous 24/7 drivel so they are searching for anything to air right now.

Tampa FL is the closest

Tampa FL is the closest significant urban area in the US to being the same distance from the equator as my home town, Brisbane, Australia, which is also on the coast, and on the eastern side of the continent, so probably pretty close in climate.

So I know all about warm climates - its getting pretty warm here already.

A lot of people in Autralia followed the US election quite closely, and I think are generally pretty happy with the outcome.

I've actually been addicted

I've actually been addicted to what the rest of the world is saying about this election. It seems overwhelmingly positive and it's really heart-warming to see that the rest of the world seems to have wanted Obama to win as much as the American supporters did.

That video of Japanese people waving little flags and singing their Obama song... Kenya declaring a national holiday in honor of Obama's victory... the released photos of Obama calling (at least) 9 foreign leaders to accept their congratulations... all the people form abroad calling into NPR this week talking about how much this restores America's image and proves to them that America isn't all talk, that out democracy is real and actually works...

It gives you a warm little tingle. One can only hope it lasts as long as possible.

A place common to all will be maintained by none. A religion common to all is perhaps not much different.

Hello from southwest

Hello from southwest Florida, Fort Myers area. I moved to Florida just about eight years ago, and while it was a very nice change for me in many regards, I can't say the past 8 years has been the best for this country. I too am pleased at the election results and look forward to seeing things unfurl over the next year or two or three. It is time to end the senseless idealistic crusade that has plagued this country during the past decade.

Thank God I'm an atheist.

What do we do if Doomsday comes?

The right wing will magically ascend into never never land because they wore their titanium chastity belts. We, if said doomsday comes about, will rightly attribute it to humans, and not a fictional being, and hopefully find a willing partner to pleasure us while waiting to get vaporized by the mushroom cloud.
