nigel is in mourning

*sigh*

It is a sad, sad day, my fellow rationalists. Both Ricardo Montalban and Patrick McGoohan have passed away. I have no clue what kind of woo either one may have believed, but both shone brightly in the pantheon of classic SF.

I raise a glass to them. One glass each.

I believe I saw an interview with Ricardo Montalbon ( he said it was pronounced Mon-Tal-ban ) in which he professed to being a mainstream, orthodox Christian.

His religious views would never keep me from expressing my admiration for him.  By all accounts he was just a hard working actor and a nice guy.

Sad

"The Prisoner" is one of my favorite series. Sad to see McGoohan go.

"I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, de-briefed or numbered!"

And for Mantalban:

"I've done far worse than kill you, Admiral. I've hurt you. And I wish to go on hurting you. I shall leave you as you left me, as you left her; marooned for all eternity in the center of a dead planet... buried alive!"

"Anyone can repress a woman, but you need 'dictated' scriptures to feel you're really right in repressing her. In the same way, homophobes thrive everywhere. But you must feel you've got scripture on your side to come up with the tedious 'Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve' style arguments instead of just recognising that some people are different." - Douglas Murray

Yah, this news puts me

Yah, this news puts me in morning as well.

As it happens, I am so much into all things 'Trek that I used to work for Creation Entertainment as crowd control at conventions. Montalban never worked a convention that I was at but I have met plenty of the stars.

Also, I happen to be the principal author of the Klingon religion (I can tell fantasy from reality).

For Riccardo Montalban:

KHAAAAAAAAN!!!!!!!!

For Patrick McGoohan:

DRAAAAAAAAKE!!!!!!!

Sto-Vo-Kor rarely opens it's doors for Earth men but both of you have earned a place among the honored dead. Please try to wait until the barge of the dead drops both of you off to begin fighting.

Suddenly I miss lava lamps, weather balloons, waterfalls and bell towers.....Sniffle, sniffle.

BTW, I still can't figure out the whole Number 6 is in fact Number 1 thing. Could any of you Prisoner aficionados explain this. He resigned from the British secret service and was sent to the Village. There the Number 2s (at the behest of Number 1) tried to break Number 6's will to figure out why he resigned. And then it turns out Number 6 is Number 1 who was commanding the Number 2s to fuck up Number 6. This is all too confusing for my limited brain. Oh and BTW, my favorite episode was The Girl Who Was Death.

Oh and BTW, my favorite episode was The Girl Who Was Death.

In the intro, the prisoner always asks number 2, "Who is number one?" to which number two always says, "You are number six." Some people have interpreted it as, "You are, number six." So, instead of evading the question, it seems as if number two is answering the question.

However, this interpretation doesn't make sense, as number two is seen communicating with number one early on in the series. In its support, it does have the entire psychedelic ending in which number six gives himself his freedom. But, it makes it seem as if number one is a computer, in my recollection.

I reckon I need to go back and re-watch the series. It's been a long time.

Mine too. I had it on saved on betamax and watched it over and over as a kid....He sees the "You have just been poisoned" note in the bottom of his glass and orders drambuie, scotch, bourbon, vodka, etc...to go hurl it up...that was first time I ever heard of drambuie....
