Battlestar Galatica, atheism, monotheism and polytheism + sexy robots that believe in all of them
Any fans here, I really havent seen any sci fi where religion was so interestingly used.
You have good and evil atheists, monotheist and polytheist robots justfying just about everything in the name of their god.
You actually have some 'evidience' of the existance of a diety (this is fictional universe), you have discussions on what is the nature of being human.
Oh did i mention there are sexy robots too!

I like that show. Are you watching the new season on sci-fi? Do you know who the 13 cylon is?
I'm watching this on Sky one (UK) we are about 3 days or so behind the US.
Last episode was Anders having brain surgery. All 13 cylons (as far as we know) have now been revealed
So how did they go from this:
to this:
That was revealed in the latest episode. I can't be bothered retyping so here's a post of mine from another forum.
!!! SPOILER WARNING !!! DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE LATEST EPISODE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Does that answer your question?

There are couple of things in your description that may be speculation.
Nothing definitely stated that humans originated on Kobol
No mentioning of Kobol being nuked or toasters being built (humans went straight to skinjobs), so the reason for the Cylons leaving are unknown
How they got to Earth is also unknown( FTL?)
To be honest the plot as it stands doesnt make too much sense but then again the person telling it currently has a bullet in his brain and there is definitely room in the plot for 'goddit'
I loved the first couple of seasons of BSG, but in all honesty, when they got to earth and it was all blasted to hell, my patience had worn out. I'm just not really interested in the answers anymore because it just feels like they're inventing new twists to keep the show on, not telling a compelling story.
Also... geez... it just got weird and woo-woo towards the end of last season. Too much religio-babble for my taste.
Atheism isn't a lot like religion at all. Unless by "religion" you mean "not religion". --Ciarin

Books about atheism
Did you see the Star Treck movie where they found god? He was just what I expected, a phony. A good athiest movie is Little Big Man with Dusten Hoffman. My favorite scene is when the indians are attacking the stagecoach filled with white christians. The priest is reading the bible and holding it in front of his chest. An indian arrow comes through the window, goes through the bible, and kills the bastard.
I saw the movie, before they announced a show, and I saw the first episode or three of the first season. Then I cut cable out of my budget. I haven't seen an episode since. Unfortunate, as it was seeming to be a show worth watching.
I never saw the old show. Or, I should say, I saw it once or twice and decided not to watch it again. The new one had promise.
Enlightened Atheist, Gaming God.
Simple:
American television poducers will no longer put anything on TV unless it has pretty girls in it (for obvious marketing reasons).
I think it's sort-of a shame.

Kobol is where they were before they split off to 13 colonies at the very least. They also say the skinjobs were made by humans, then the skinjobs made their own cylons. Plus, they went to the 12 colonies to warn them not to make the same mistake again. They got to earth in ships, whether those ships had FTL or not is irrelivant, all that matters is that the resurrection ship built by the 5 didn't. The reason it didn't is irrelivant.
As to your original question, the whole religion thing is the hardest part of this show for me to stomach. So many times I've been close to turning it off and not watching again because I find those parts so hard to stomach. Now it turns out the religion thing was just giving them false hope all along as earth was uninhabitable. Many say false hope is better than none at all, this shows how it can actually be more damaging. They could have spent this time looking for somewhere habitable, instead it's all been for naught.
The original show was penned by a mormon I believe, and apparently the 12 tribes mirrors their religion. That's why the "good guys" (colonials) are polytheistic with 12 tribes, "bad guys" (cylons) are monotheistic with their "one true god", and atheists for the better part are evil (even Admiral Adama is put in a bad light for the scenes with religious tones). I am trying to straighten up the claims I'm making, but en.battlewiki.org isn't loading for me right now and that's probably the best source for concise information to confirm/deny my statements. You'll just have to take what I'm saying with a big grain of salt and confirm it for yourselves later.

I guess I'm lucky as an atheist Brit as christianity has basically died as a political force here I can enjoy religion in fiction to provide a great basis for story selling.
The religious side of BSG is what makes it so good, same as you don't need to be a christian to enjoy The Omen (the original).
Do American atheists really not celebrate christmas the ancient festival of capitalism? or enjoy ancient cathedrals (if they travel).
I missed allot of episodes so I'm not really sure whats going on anymore. I suppose I should goggle it.
I live in American and I'm an atheist. I have not problem with christmas, or with appreciating architecture. Just because I don't believe in what religion stands for doesn't mean I can't associate myself with anything that has been touched by it.
