A scholar, Rachel Elior who has studied the Dead Sea Scrolls for years has concluded that Josephus made up the Essenes in order to impress the Romans that not all Jews were losers but some were exceptional. She claims these people were in fact the sons of Zadok a priest group kicked out of Jerusalem and the Temple by the Hasmoneans. Scholars for years have been trying to find trace or references to them but haven't been able.
