Documentary filmmaker introduces a video series about animal sacrifice and the influence of religion in America
Hello everyone!
I'm glad I found this forum. My name is Mike Pulcinella. I'm an agnostic. I'm also an independent documentary filmmaker who until recently has done mostly sports related videos about the insane world of bodybuilding.
I have just released my first of a series of 'webisodes" about an incident that happened to me involving religion and its misuse. I feel that I can expand outward from the small and personal story that I tell here and make this about bigger cultural issues.
I must be honest and say I'm not quite sure where I'm going with this yet. My objectives changes the deeper I get into it. I'm hoping that you all here can give me some feedback and direction for this series.
Thanks in advance!
Mike Pulcinella

Welcome to the forums. You might want to read http://www.rationalresponders.com/am_i_agnostic_or_atheist in the near future.
Great article! Thanks for that.
Of course I'm an atheist. I am aware of the subtleties of the terminology, but I choose to use the "agnostic" label mostly because of the extreme negative connotations that the word "atheist" has in the general public.
I find that in order to have a more productive conversation with believers it is prudent to say one is agnostic. In that way one can avoid the instant defensiveness that often occurs in discussions of belief. They are more likely to think "Oh! He's open minded!"
Whether the word is being used correctly or incorrectly is immaterial. I am more concerned with connecting with people and the common conception of atheist in the minds of the general public is not a good one, I am sorry to say.
So, any feedback on my video or are you just concerned with my vocabulary at this point??

I enjoyed reading both of your posts. Welcome to the site, and the best of luck to you in this endeavour!
Regarding the vid's, you'll have to wait. I have only one system capable of watching online videos with at the moment(PS3), and my roomate has been hogging the hell out of it lately since he met a girl on Home. I have a back log of a good 25 vids I need to watch before I can get to these. Hopefully I remember them when I get the chance.

The video was interesting, but I'm not sure the events it depicted can be blamed completely on religion. It seems kind of like a Case of asshole neighbor syndrome. I also respect the mans right to do whatever stupid senseless things he wants. That said his religion shouldn't give him a right to get away with braking local laws, and should have to be subject to the same laws as everyone else. If it was my religious belief that I need to throw eggs every Sunday that doesn't mean that I can get away with throw eggs in other peoples faces. This man should have to clean up the messes from his animal sacrifices at the very least, and harassing his neighbor because she called the police on him is not right even if it is a very common thing for neighbors to do to each other. Over all I would have to say that the guy you depicted in the video is a grade a asshole , and a nut job.
Where religion enters into it is in the hands-off reaction of the city simply because religion was involved. That will be more clearly presented in later episodes.
Thanks for your feedback!

Hi Mike!
Initially, I was thinking that you shouldn't have revealed that the woman in the story was your girlfriend, but then I saw your response in the comments section. Now, I feel like you should have (if you could) used a different story just to avoid this altogether. I don't know; it just seems to lower the quality somehow...
Anyways, I subscribed to your channel, and I look forward to the next part of your documentary.
Welcome to the forum!
Our revels now are ended. These our actors, | As I foretold you, were all spirits, and | Are melted into air, into thin air; | And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, | The cloud-capped towers, the gorgeous palaces, | The solemn temples, the great globe itself, - Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve, | And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, | Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff | As dreams are made on, and our little life | Is rounded with a sleep. - Shakespeare
It's a good point you make, but there was no other way to do it, IMO.
I will echo what Penn of Penn and Teller said about his show Bulls**t..."We are fair...but biased."
I think that's honest and it will also be an integral part of this series as it goes on. At every point you will have to keep in mind that this is coming from one perspective (until I can get the other side to speak on camera) and you will have to determine for yourself how fair I am being. I think that's interesting.

I've watched it now. I have no concerns regarding the issue of your girlfriend. You were quite up front and open about it, allowing viewers the knowledge that you are in a biased position. Dishonesty can come around to bite you in the ass in the media, so I applaud your transparency.
I think that it added an emotional power to the piece, having it be so personal. Yes, it lowers the ability to be unbiased and objective, but you quite clearly haven't sought it in the first place. Hence, no problem. It doesn't qualify as news as a result (unless you watch Fox), but it is more akin to an expose on nightline or cbc.
I look forward to seeing more vids in your series.

Thanks for your input! I recognize that my approach has its pros and cons, but my bottom line is to make it interesting in order to bring a pervasive problem into the light. I hope I've done that.
Update: I have been banned from rootsandrooted.org, a website celebrating African heritage, because I posted a link to this video in a blog entry about Santeria. I expect many more bannings to come. It has been very apparent to me from the beginning that practitioners of this religion DO NOT wish to debate about it in any way.

Accessing rootsandrooted.com from a different computer I found that my post had been altered in a cowardly manner.

In general this has been my experience with any challenge to the practitioners of this religion in person and online. I wrote the admin an email and sent it a few minutes ago. I will not match his derision and will continue to respectfully request a dialog.
