Darkness may represent evil as a throwback to when our ancestors were living in caves they heard all sorts of scary shit outside in the dark.

Humans are not a nocturnal species. We are more accustomed to daylight.
Naturally then, any environment that isn't best suited for us will be feared, since we have a disadvantage there.
Theism is why we can't have nice things.
