Connie Culp's facial transplant
Offline ...This is an amazing success. I imagine most people have heard this story by now:
Mrs. Culp was shot in the face at point blank range with a shotgun by her husband (bizarrely: A) He was only given 7 years for the attempted murder and (nearly permanent) disfigurement of his spouse) and B) She has 'forgiven' him and claims she will be waiting for him when he is released. Battered wife syndrome, anyone? Ahem, anyway...) and her face was, by and large, destroyed.
The doctors in Cleveland, however, have managed to pull off one of... no, the best reconstructive surgery effort I've ever seen done on a face:

Now, I realize that she does not look exactly 'normal' at present - however, the surgery is not completely done, and it's already obvious that the foundation for a natural-looking face is done. One she has grown the appropriate nerves and muscles to gain motor control over her new face, the surgeons are going to pare off the drooping parts of her face and tighten-up the cosmetic part of the operation. Dare I predict that once she's done, she'll look hot (probably hotter than she even did prior to the operation).

If somebody shot me in the face with a shotgun, I'd be waiting for them with a baseball bat.
Well, personally, I hope that the surgery is successful enough that she basically decides the same thing after other dudes start paying attention to her while her hubby is behind bars.

Is there a before before?
Yes, there is. Thanks to my goggle-fu, I actually had it before I got to this post.
I don'y know if they will ever get her back to the real before pic but the fact that they have gone as far as they have gives hope to other people who may need such surgeries in the future. Heck but while she may never be that good looking again, she could certainly work pretty much anywhere and nobody would give her a second look for being some type of freak.
Edit: Having read the story online.wsj.com/article/SB124155639530788847.html I see that the doctors are the same ones that are going to be working on the woman who had her face torn off by the chimp a few weeks ago. I really hope that they can do as good for that woman as well.

I hope. Thanks for the pic. That's really ...horrible, what happened to her. There's a few things that really get to me. One of them is a botched murder. Don't botch your murders, folks. I'm amazed that the surgery was able to go as far as it has. Score one for medical science.

That CT scan is just scary. It's breathtaking sometimes what a human can survive.
