Too honest

I am far to honest to do that.  It is why I never considered divintiy school or any priesthood. I always wondered what those people would do if they had to get a real job,   insurence sales perhaps; AKA Ted H.

I had a sales job

I had a sales job once........I failed epically.

Our revels now are ended. These our actors, | As I foretold you, were all spirits, and | Are melted into air, into thin air; | And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, | The cloud-capped towers, the gorgeous palaces, | The solemn temples, the great globe itself, - Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve, | And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, | Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff | As dreams are made on, and our little life | Is rounded with a sleep. - Shakespeare

In all the jobs that I hav

In all the jobs that I hav had, I have never liked "upselling" much less knowing pitching a needless product was a waste of money.

So no, I could not bring myself to profit off the deulisions of people who dont know better.

I think the answer is

I think the answer is obvious.  If any of us could bring ourselves to convince people to give us money in exchange for delusional beliefs, we would not be posting on a freethinker bulletin board.  We'd be preaching the gospel at a church.

If the question is whether we would be able to do it, of course we would.  It takes no skill at all.  I'm sure I'd be very good at it.  I don't do it because I have this conscience that keeps me from it.

I have a conscience not because some sky fairy gave it to me when he made me, but because I'm the product of millions of years of evolution.  Among the human characteristics I have is a moral sense.

If I didn't have that moral sense, I could do very well taking the script of the theists.  There's a God up there. I know what he wants.  I'll tell you how to make him happy.  All you need to do is give me money, power, and sex.  Then my invisible big friend up there will give you eternal life.

People fall for this.  That's unfortunately also a legacy of human evolution.  Some are smart enough to take advantage of flaws in human cognition.  Some open gambling casinos.  Some become confidence men.  Some go into advertising.  Some open churches.

I remember a church I went to for a period of time growing up, where the minister was an atheist (he didn't admit it until he quit). I asked him about it when he retired and he said "It was just a job." He told me he was paid 55k/year to work one day a week.

Theism is why we can't have nice things.

Yeah.

I've got an idea!

Create a Board with a few forums and lots of userids I could signon under. Make a bunch of topics and responses to any fools that happen to believe lots of other members are signed on and responding to them. Recruit a number of folks "in" on the scheme.

Ask the fools for donations to yours truely, and make it look like lots of members have made donations!

Sure!

Just like assholes and their mega-churches that manipulate
their foollish flock, I'd do the same.

I just need a theme....

Atheism sounds good! And it ain't reglious! Who could accuse me of dishonesty, eh?

That doesn't sound like it would be very profitable.

"That doesn't sound like it

"That doesn't sound like it would be very profitable."
--------

Maybe not, but I'd at least have lots of fun manipulating
foolish Atheists to think they're actually responding to other Atheists on a wide range of topics. AND I could play act as hundreds of different people with all kinds of gripes and neurotics shit wrong with them, too!

Sounds like fun. I'd be their god, and they'd not even know it!

Hell. It worked for anEvangelical. Why shouldn't it be as much fun for an Atheist, too!

Yes I would but its

Yes I would but its extremely hard to be a good salesman if you don't believe in what you are selling. Some people can do it but its relatively rare.

In fact I have sold computer training which was sold as 'individual one to one training' a few years back when in fact it was a tape recorder and a tape. I was utterly shit at selling it as I knew it was a con

If they're already going to

If they're already going to give their hard earned money to some asshole that's too lazy too work it might as well be me.

After eating an entire bull, a mountain lion felt so good he started roaring. He kept it up until a hunter came along and shot him.

The moral: When you're full of bull, keep your mouth shut.

You mean like promoting the idea my company's products are the best? Or like saying the Buccaneers are the best football team for free?

Well, if I did, it

Well, if I did, it would be for the lulz, not the money.

As an example, back in the 90's, my brother a friend* and I were in NYC across the street from an orthodox seminary wearing monk's robes. We were actually on our way to an S&M club but those details would make the story much longer.

Anyway, some dude stopped us to ask if we were white supremacists. How one connects brown robes (purchased from a catholic supply store no less) to the KKK is beyond me. Yet when he asked the question, without missing a beat, I returned fire by asking him for money. He didn't give me any but it was worthwhile for the comedy.

*If you get the DVD of “Trekkies” that has the outtakes, you can see my friend. He is the guy who says that his job is : “I build bombs that burn Bosnian babies”. And yes, that really is his job. He has a PhD in whatever explosives engineering would be called.

Start a new one in Intros and Humor, this is too good not to hear.

Done and linked.

But there are better stories from those days.
