Wtf are you thinking canada?

A south African man has been given asylum in Canada "for being white". Apparently There is so much black on white violence in south africa that it warrents  asylum, it seems funny as although there is a high crime rate there really isn't much racial violence going on. If its that easy to get asylum man anyone could, hell on those grounds I could get asylum. Tbh I just think this guy is a chancer and canada you are welcome to have him. not suprisingly this has pissed quite a few people off, I mean do they really think south africa is that bad?

But more than that I just laugh at this bullshit and wonder wtf are you thinking canada

Oh man. That's just

Oh man. That's just ridiculous. I mean, compared to the people that refugee status is supposed to address (y'know, like actual political refugees) and considering the people turned away ... that panel has to be insane to open up a can of worms like that.

I don't see anything wrong with this?

As an American, I think people should be able to move wherever they please. There shouldn't be so many restrictions on it.

I keep several places in Canada on my list of locations to move to at some point in my life.

Although, asylum for  being white is a bit odd of a reason. I suppose I can understand it if it is a small minority that is persecuted in that area.

I have a lack of knowledge about that region of the world though.

there is nothing wrong with

there is nothing wrong with him moving to canada, its that he got granted asylum, i mean we arent a war zone or anything. It is odd. Yeah whites arent persecuted really, im white and I live in south Africa. I can say iv never been attacked because im white, sure a few off hand comments but everyone gets that no matter who you are.

Btw they found that no matter where in the country he would be persecuted.

What I find wrong with it is that it's not his government that's persecuting him. That's what political asylum is for. He says he was mugged and insulted. Fuck, he might get mugged and insulted here -- there's no country in the world that could save him from that.

My point exactly.

Yeah, that's what I find weird. He actually convinced a panel of presumably educated adults that there are no safe neighborhoods for a white guy in South Africa. Uh ... what?

That article got it exactly.

That article got it exactly. "They also called him bad names."

Seriously, how embarrassing is it that he's not on a plane right now? He was here illegally for a year. A year! And not from Sierra Leone, the Congo, North Korea, or any other place you might actually have to worry about your life.

I guy I used to work with was a political dissident in Ethiopia years ago. Dude still has the cigar burns on his arms. That's who gets refugee status. Not somebody who got himself a Canadian girlfriend and just doesn't want to go back.

this is funny since i just

this is funny since i just got through reading a pertinent passage by my favorite literary journalist, ryszard kapuscinski, who's written extensively on his travels to turbulent parts of the third world, often during revolutions. he writes about the terror that afflicts former colonizers when an indigenous population suddenly becomes liberated, and gives his first-hand witnessing of the hasty flight of afrikaaners as an example.  they were convinced that the bantu they had so long abused were going to cut their throats, poison their soup, rape their daughters, etc., etc., but, at least according to kapuscinski's keen outsider's observation, there was almost no danger of this.  it was all in the heads of the whites, a manifestation of the decades of guilt which, as long as their oppressive system stood, could be soothed to sleep in any number of ways.  however, once that system was removed, the pent-up guilt burst in a flood of horror of imagined violent retribution.

"I have never felt comfortable around people who talk about their feelings for Jesus, or any other deity for that matter, because they are usually none too bright. . . . Or maybe 'stupid' is a better way of saying it; but I have never seen much point in getting heavy with either stupid people or Jesus freaks, just as long as they don't bother me. In a world as weird and cruel as this one we have made for ourselves, I figure anybody who can find peace and personal happiness without ripping off somebody else deserves to be left alone. They will not inherit the earth, but then neither will I. . . . And I have learned to live, as it were, with the idea that I will never find peace and happiness, either. But as long as I know there's a pretty good chance I can get my hands on either one of them every once in a while, I do the best I can between high spots."

LMFAO: "white South Africans

LMFAO: "white South Africans and African South Africans"

i think there might be something to the claim that at least some on this panel were racist if this guy is too afraid to say "black," or at least "bantu" or something like that.  what, white people can't be africans now?  what about the millions of arabs?  or indians?  or copts?  i'm white; what if i had been born a citizen of south africa, or kenya, or egypt, would i not be correct in identifying myself as an african?  it's slips like that that can really reveal a person's ignorance.

anybody else remember the hilarious exchange on SNL a few years back between charlize theron and tracy morgan about the hardships of being "african american"?  my favorite part:

morgan: you want a newport?

theron: no thanks, i got my kools.

oh, and could the photo of this "refugee" be any goofier?  yeah, he really looks hounded and distressed.  and while of course this could mean nothing, i can't help but notice the guy's head is completely shaved.

People were always going to be scared, its only natural and if you look to the rest of africa you can see why they would be scared, in many other african countries the whites were persicuted after colonialism ended. But it should be noted not all white got like that, infact less than half did. you have to remember the white south Africans voted to end aparthied (admitedly aparthied would of ended either way this just sped it up a little) as seen here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_African_apartheid_referendum,_1992

People were not going to vote yes if they thought by doing so they were going to die. Hell even some of the thick afrikaaner areas voted yes. But yes there was some panic in some other afrikaaner areas.

But this is irrelavant as its been 15 years now since apartheid ended.

Yah, I am seriously not getting what is up with that. After spending a year in Canada, presumably he had established himself enough to keep a roof over his head and food in his belly all while staying off the proverbial radar screen of the authorities. At that point, he really ought to be able to keep going that way for as long as he wanted to.

So what has happened with him? Really, I suppose that he could have decided to just make his status official now but if that were the case, why the lame excuse? Granted he has been in the country illegally but if he was even waiting tables in a diner, then he was at least moderately productive. While I am no expert on Canada, would it be so hard to stay in the country under those circumstances?

On the other hand, the lame excuse may make some sense if he did something to draw the attention of the authorities. I can only imagine what that might have been but just for shits and giggles, perhaps he got arrested and the government would rather not have to pay to prosecute him for whatever he may have done?

This would be my guess, he must of been found out or why reveal yourself on a long shot. Come to think of it there may of been a little bribe action, that makes the most sense to me.

It's unlikely that a carney had access to enough funds to bribe a panel of bureaucrats. That would take serious coin, only because they're already paid pretty well. He was probably at the point where -- since he didn't properly apply to stay in the first place -- he was going for broke. Worst case scenario is being deported to South Africa. Boo hoo.

 Looks like the canadian

Looks like the canadian government is a little embarresed about all of this,

Quote:
Toronto - Canada's federal government said on Thursday it was challenging a contentious Canadian immigration board panel ruling that granted refugee status to a white South African man, Brandon Huntley, who claimed persecution from blacks in his home country.

The likely reason

Quote:
South Africa had asked the Canadian government to appeal to the court.

I don't know, I think there

I don't know, I think there was a fair amount of outrage. Especially since a LOT of people who live in Toronto actually "earned" their refugee status by being in countries with legitimately oppressive governments. The quote from Deepak Obhrai should read, "I can't believe I'm getting this sound bite. It's too easy!"
