Mormon Leader: Religious freedom at risk!

 http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5iCrSWSM6V3N-yi3tAJOBlnjwR27wD9BAGSB01

"The anti-Mormon backlash after California voters overturned gay marriage last fall is similar to the intimidation of Southern blacks during the civil rights movement, a high-ranking Mormon said Tuesday."

"Oaks suggested that atheists and others are seeking to intimidate people of faith and silence their voices in the public square, according to his prepared remarks."

This is hilarious to me somehow.

It's probably hilarious

It's probably hilarious because of the not quite vague racism and the fact that he's serious and probably doesn't realise what he said.  Or it's something else.  I'm grinning, myself.

BigUniverse wrote,

"Well the things that happen less often are more likely to be the result of the supper natural. A thing like loosing my keys in the morning is not likely supper natural, but finding a thousand dollars or meeting a celebrity might be."

It's always funny when

It's always funny when oblivious people run their mouths. Even when it's in defense of the indefensible.

Nothing this hard should taste so beefy.

I hate to be the wet blanket, here...

...but I just can't laugh at this stuff.  Take a look at these quotes:

"And now I desire that this inequality should no more be in this land, especially among this my people; but I desire that this land be a land of liberty, and every man may enjoy his rights and privileges alike, so long as the Lord sees fit that we may live..." (The Book of Mormon, Mosiah 29:32)

"According to the laws and constitution of the people, which I have suffered to be established, and should be maintained for the rights and protection of all flesh, according to just and holy principles; that every man may act in doctrine and principle pertaining to futurity, according to the moral agency* which I have given unto him..."  (Doctrine and Covenants, 101:77-78)

"We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men..." (Pearl of Great Price, Articles of Faith, article #13)

No, I'm not switching back to the Latter-Day Saint Church.  I mean to point out that these quotes--all of them--are from documents that any Mormon would call "the Word of God."  Yet...as I have seen so often...conservative religious groups just cannot seem to comprehend the application of these ideas, which they allegedly believe came from "God," to the argument over gay rights.  Please note that these are far from being the only such verses that I could conceivably quote to you.  Please note also that that this is far from being a Mormons-only issue.  I just can't laugh anymore at the various church's obvious act of ignoring the very texts that they themselves regard as the most important in all the earth--because they're too busy punishing gays (and lesbians, etc.,) for existing.

I'd hate to think that I've lost my sense of humor...but there it is.

I should have written this earlier.

ClockCat, thanks for trying to cheer me up about this.  And I'm sorry I didn't say anything until now.

*******

At the end of the day, I'm just trying to lead a good Christian life. That means going to church on Sunday, following the Ten Commandments, and fighting what I believe to be a sexual abomination through a series of petty actions and bitter comments made under my breath. Sure, I sometimes wish God would just reach into my heart and give me the ability to treat all people with, at the very least, the decency and respect they deserve as human beings. But unfortunately for that new couple who moved in three houses down, He hasn't yet.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have God's work to do.

Great stuff from The Onion. Thanks for posting the link, CC.
