*didnt watch video link, not visiting hippy conspiracy website... that, and i hate link-dropping posts*
Tar Sands are an assest to the country, and as long as the canadian government keeps a VERY close eye on the companies exploiting it (evironmentally & financially) i have no problem with its existence and utilization.
What Would Kharn Do?
That video reminds me of the fiction based uproar over the seal hunt. I'll point out a few accusations absurdity and leave it there.
"The tar sands kill native people"
What?
"The tar sands suck money"
What?
"The tar sands suck energy"
What?
"The tar sands violate Kyoto"
What?
All of those and more are far off the mark. An argument could easily be made that wildlife has and continues to be killed by oil on the surface, but I've never heard of humans dying. You'd have to be a worker or a trespasser to be killed on site. People die in jobs all the time. Trespassers are asking for it, though I've never heard of one.
Money and Energy are provided due to tar sands in excess of use, so that's just the opposite of the truth.
And there is nothing about the tar sands that violates Kyoto, which isn't even a fully ratified treaty anyway.

In the time since I posted it occurred to me to mention that Canada exports the majority of the oil recovered to other countries, most prominent among them the US. In fact, the last time I checked Canada was the largest supplier of oil that the US has. Which was another reason I shook my head at Iraq.
Now that I have a bit more time, I can admit that the video has a few things right, but at the same time I can point the finger at the US, the EU, and others like Japan with ease, for more than just buying so much of it (which is admittedly only a sharing of blame, not a denial of it). By illegally decimating our forest industry over the last ten to twenty years, the US has forced Canadians to flock to and inflate the oil industry because it's a far more successful and stable business. This is exasperated by things that are no fault of anyone (discovery of the effects of society on the environment, which forced us to curb many fishing industries heavily to prevent multiple extinctions, amongst other things)

and others are partially to blame on other countries (the EU and its ban on seal products for example, and Japan for overfishing transient species that migrate between us) which really restrict the things we can sell to people that we have available. Oil is one thing everyone will buy, and we happen to be one of the most oil rich countries in the world. People from all over Canada flock to Alberta to work for the oil industry. If you want to shut them down, you'll have to reduce demand and/or ease restrictions placed upon us by others. Those placed by fate we can deal with.

I have to violate my own; self imposed boycott here, for this.
but;!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That video is a load of missimformed bullshit!!!!!!!!!!!!!
trees do not grow on TAR SANDS: nothing does!!!! How does one distroy trees that do not exist?
First Nations people: do not live on the tar sands!!! They never did!
Animal life does not and never did live on the tar sands. what would they eat?
The tar sands are dug up; the tar is extracted. the sand & soil is put back where it was. THEN!!!!!!! flora & fauna developes around it. Did anyone here ever hear about "evolutionary practicality".
Who ever or whatever came up with that video is LIKELY a big fan of Glenn Beck, Billo and the others on fix news or what ever Rupert mudlark is calling it these days.
"Very funny Scotty; now beam down our clothes."

If man was formed from dirt, why is there still dirt?
Well, when the world converts to electric cars everything will be just fine. Except that they need huge arrays of batteries and those require large quantities of nickel. To replace all of the cars in the USA alone you would need somewhere around 2x10^9 kg of nickel.
And where is that going to come from? Well, according to a quick google, Canada seems to hold the best proved reserves. Since nickel mining is a much messier business than tar sand extraction...

Or we could implement a real transportation solution...
