I am registered as a Libertarian, but I don't really like the party leadership (so many Repubs jumping ship and claiming to be a Libertarian http://www.bobbarr2008.com/ LOL), and the ideology has really soured on me as I age. It is obsessed with taxes=slavery type of thinking, and doesn't really think of regulation of business in the long term. Deregulation leads to monopoly, which ends up killing the free market. So, the bitter pill to swallow is regulation in order for capitalism to exist. After all, for capitalism to even work, it must be assumed that the number of firms is of an adequate size... otherwise, there is no competition, and no capitalism. No competition can lead to prosperity; it can also lead to economic ruin, as we witnessed this past year. I also don't think corporations deserve personhood. That's my problem; I like elements of Libertarianism, Socialism, and the Green party. To have to choose between Democrat and Republican is hard, but in California it's not so hard. Democrat every time. The Republicans out here are a strange beast. They have high taxes while still cutting things we need like education and state services. I don't mind paying high taxes, but I'll be damned if you raise tuition by 35% at the same time in one year. Someone needs to be imprisoned for that.

BTW Jorum, my mother works for the state, and is getting furloughed and reamed for any benefits she was expecting come retirement. You might think, "Good, the lazy bureaucrat!" The irony is she is a staunch Republican. Beyond that, she provides a service that I can't imagine the private sector filling -- overhearing labor disputes between businesses and employees. I suppose once we cut that out, the only recourse for the working poor and middle class is a lawyer? Oh, wait, no one can afford lawyers. Oh well, guess Labor Code doesn't need to be enforced, then! Over the years, I've realized there's more and more of these examples that just vitiate the Libertarian ideology.

Oddly, on the issue of gun ownership I'm a states' rights kind of guy. I say oddly because even though lots of Libertarians claim to be "States' Rights" to the death, suddenly on the gun issue they are all about federal supremacy. While I might be cautiously OK with a guy in Tennessee with an anti-tank gun, do I really think this is applicable to the whole nation? Hell no. I can yell "fire!" in an open field in Nebraska, but I really shouldn't be allowed to in a crowded, bustling city.
