Among the Deconverted
Hi all. Pleased to meet you all.
My friends call me Kira... actually, most people do.
I was born and rasied in a very religious family. I was pretty effectively brainwashed into believing it all for years. Shockingly, or probably not so shockingly, studying my religion through the channels my religion had set up, ergo, bible study! was the reason I finally started to break away from first my own family's religion and eventually all religion.
I'm pleased to say I am now an atheist.
I've been on a few different forums on this subject. Looking for one with a nice mix of views. Looking forward to getting to know you all.

Welcome!
Many here have had similar experiences. Others like myself have had the fortune of not being forced into a religion in childhood. You'll fit in well I think.
Enlightened Atheist, Gaming God.
Our upbringings were similar - mmmm...funny word upbringings...
Anyway - nice to meet you and I'm sure you'll have fun here.

Welcome!
Myself, I have dabbled in religion in the past but never hooked. Lucky i guess. Hope you have a nice time here

Welcome to the forum, Kira.
Welcome aboard Kira. Congratulations on breaking free, been there done that.
I think you'll find this site has a wide array of views, however the overwhelming majority have no problem with religion being confronted in every legal manner possible. This includes the idea that religion can/should be ridiculed in order to help religious people see the light.

Congrats! You win... well nothing. But your freedom, well that's something.
Welcome!
Yeah. That actually seems to be one of the most common reasons people give for deconverting. They start studying the Bible to get closer to God, but end up questioning their beliefs when it doesn't make any sense.
Our revels now are ended. These our actors, | As I foretold you, were all spirits, and | Are melted into air, into thin air; | And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, | The cloud-capped towers, the gorgeous palaces, | The solemn temples, the great globe itself, - Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve, | And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, | Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff | As dreams are made on, and our little life | Is rounded with a sleep. - Shakespeare

It seems like the only view you have is this one.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome!
I think that the intimate knowledge of some of the issues with religion, and just how much it does not make for a good upbringing, allowing me to give first hand accounts about it can be quite useful, though I'm not particularly sure it balances out the fact that I'm essentially ostracized from my family. the best part being that they totally don't see that that's exactly what they're doing.
Thanks to that first hand experiance though, I have to say I am wholeheartedly in agreement that religion has to stop. Kids shouldn't go through life with their parents caring more about that sadist in the bible than about them.
Yeah, I've noticed that about people who've deconverted. Considering the conent of the bible, it's amazing a person can read it and still believe any of it.
xD haha <3<3 Hi Doomy, Alas I'm not that Kira. picked up the name before that came out in the states (to the best of my knowledge), from a different manga, awsome story though!
Also, randomsauce question. Anyone know of any Theist/Athiest debate Forums hosted by theists? I'd love to poke my nose into one.
Prob JPSkeptic would know, or BSapient or Hamby - or that peddler of fantasies, eXni...

If you want to feel like you're on an theist/atheist debate forum hosted by a theist I can just ban you from this site if you want. Or just try christianforums.com for yourself. See how long you last.

lol,
That's alright, I'd rather stick around. I've been curious though. So far every debate forum I've been able to find that debates the two sides has been dominated by athiests. Wanted to nose around someplace where that wasn't the majority. Guaging from the response I take it they tend to be ban happy?
....
Edit:
Wow, just poked my nose over there, after some proding I managed to find their rules. Sounds like hinting that Christianity might not be real is strictly prohibited there.
from what i've heard, theologyweb is also dominated by heavy-handed fundy assholes who will ban you at the drop of a hat. i've heard it's quite common to be cussed out by christians there and then get banned for using profanity the minute you decide to return the favor.
"I have never felt comfortable around people who talk about their feelings for Jesus, or any other deity for that matter, because they are usually none too bright. . . . Or maybe 'stupid' is a better way of saying it; but I have never seen much point in getting heavy with either stupid people or Jesus freaks, just as long as they don't bother me. In a world as weird and cruel as this one we have made for ourselves, I figure anybody who can find peace and personal happiness without ripping off somebody else deserves to be left alone. They will not inherit the earth, but then neither will I. . . . And I have learned to live, as it were, with the idea that I will never find peace and happiness, either. But as long as I know there's a pretty good chance I can get my hands on either one of them every once in a while, I do the best I can between high spots."

I just looked over there and saw the 'play by post Christian RPG forum'.
