Ubuntu Christian Edition

I saw someone refer to it in a comment on YouTube. I thought they were joking. C'mon... someone actually thought they needed to create a version of Ubuntu specifically for Christians? Get real! But, no. It's no joke. It exists.

http://ubuntuce.com/

It includes some Bible and worship software and -- surprise surprise! -- a censorship suite with a "graphical tool to adjust the filter settings [...] developed specifically for Ubuntu Christian Edition."

Where is Wonko the Sane when you need him?

Ubuntu is one of many Linux

Ubuntu is one of many Linux distributions.  It's based on another Linux distribution, Debian, but is updated more frequently if I understand correctly.  Other well-known Linux distributions include RedHat (free cutting edge version is Fedora), Slackware, Gentoo, and so on.

Ubuntu seems to be one of the most user-friendly and popular versions of Linux.  I'm pretty computer literate but my wife isn't and she finds Ubuntu easier to use than Windows.

If you're a PC gamer, though, you should be aware that most Windows-based games won't work well (if at all) on Linux.  I have a couple of Windows programs that I like to keep around so I have a dual boot system.  That is, when I reboot, it will automatically boot to Ubuntu but first it shows me a screen that allows me to choose which operating system I want to use.  I don't boot to Windows very often, though.  There is very little that is not done just as well or better on Ubuntu -- not to mention that Linux is more secure than Windows.

It was all the annoyances I encountered with Windows Vista that finally pushed me into using Ubuntu as my primary operating system.  So, thanks, Microsoft, for being so shitty that I was driven to find something better.

Right now I'm using Windows

Right now I'm using Windows Vista.  If it starts giving me trouble it's nice to know I have something to switch to.

You can also run the Live CD which loads the operating system without installing it.  This is pretty cool if you just want to take a look at Ubuntu and see if it is something worthwhile.  I use Windows 7 with Ubuntu in a VM.  I also use Fedora for my external DNS, mail, web, and SSH.

Just keep in mind that it is a different operating system...it will look and feel different, and it may take some getting used to.

But a Christian edition?  Wow, it makes me wonder if some supergeek did that as a joke, but the "target audience" took it seriously.

Me:"Yes, so is light and gravity. Pardon me while I flash this strobe while dropping a bowling ball on your head. This shouldn't bother you; after all, these are just theories."

There is also Sabily,

There is also Sabily, formerly named "Ubuntu Muslim Edition":  http://www.sabily.org/

...and Jubuntu for Jews: https://launchpad.net/jubuntu -- but this one doesn't seem to take itself quite so seriously.

Buddhabuntu is in development -- https://launchpad.net/buduntu

"Ubuntu Satanic Edition" appears to be mostly for the fun of it: http://ubuntusatanic.org -- their site includes a link to the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

I use ubuntu studio edition

I use ubuntu studio edition because it has all kind of neat video and audio software. I use ubuntu server up at work for just about all of my web applications that require recent software versions, such as Pandora FMS. I also use it to run Asterisk, an open source telephony engine, to run custom voice call applications that I wrote.

CentOS is a binary compatible version of Red Hat, and I use that for my applications that need RedHat compatibility. It is also updated less frequently than Ubuntu (for stability)

And finally, we are required to use Novell's SuSE linux for our Novell infrastructure. It's a bit bloated, but is comparable to Red Hat in terms of stability.

Now that I am done with that drivel, the fact that someone can create an "Ubuntu Satanic Edition" just goes to show the power of open source software. As you all can see though it can get a bit ridiculous at times. Jubuntu just made me laugh.

just a few of my favorite open source projects:
