Hi!

HI!

I have just come across this site. I used to be a Christian but am now a confirmed atheist. I look forward to many an interesting time and discussion here!

I wonder if you were a "skin-deep only" Christian, like I was.

“A meritocratic society is one in which inequalities of wealth and social position solely reflect the unequal distribution of merit or skills amongst human beings, or are based upon factors beyond human control, for example luck or chance. Such a society is socially just because individuals are judged not by their gender, the colour of their skin or their religion, but according to their talents and willingness to work, or on what Martin Luther King called 'the content of their character'. By extension, social equality is unjust because it treats unequal individuals equally.” "Political Ideologies" by Andrew Heywood (2003)

Welcome

It's always nice to see a new atheist on site,   Tell us where you hail from?  I'm in Toronto area myself.  Don't worry about Brian37,  he talks to himself a lot but his psychiatrist says he's basicly harmless;  if he can only break his addiction to that alledged football team in D.C.

Hi X 2

Thanks for the welcome.

I was, I think, a committed Christian. I used to be quite heavily involved in church, especially the music side and wrote and performed my own material, making CDs at home etc. Latterly, I was a Sunday school teacher - that lasted for about three weeks. i packed that in when the materials I was asked to use was based on Revelation!

I always did have questions but they were never answered so i went on a journey of my own and began to do some deep, thinking. Basically, I thought my way out of church and religion! Reading people like Richard Holloway, Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens, (Also JS Spong, the 'atheist Bishop') encouraged me to be honest with myself. I went through some personal stress at the same time, resulting in the loss of my hair (It came back when i left church! - there's an advert for you!)

I came to the conclusion that there is no superior power and tired of the patronising sermons I was being forced to listen to. I began to hate the dogma and hypocrisy of the church (especially when it came to sexuality) and decided I could no longer be part of it.

I am a Depute Head Teacher in Ayr Scotland. i live in Prestwick, Ayrshire with my wife. My two daughters have moved away. One at Uni in Dundee and the other a junior doctor in Aberdeen.

I have an idea for a book. A guide to religion for children called "Think For Yourself!" Any ideas about how I go about publishing or getting interest?

Good to be on board!

Welcome! I think you'll like

Welcome! I think you'll like it here. We can be a rowdy bunch, sometimes. And that's a good thing.
