This technology is at its beginning. In the future, they will make virtual "probes" that can, to some extent, pierce through extradimensional gateways in the spactime fabric and interact with their surroundings. Some of them will then probably be used for travelling back in time in order to study specimens from earlier, primitive cultures (such as ours).
