Sam harris and Michael Shermer vs Deepak Chopra and crazy lady

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-8-Yxdphsg&feature=related

Funny debate I think although Deepaks message is atleast positive it's still mostly bullshit. The lady never spoke about the subject and just did impressions of people she met, she also babbled alot about nothing.

 I really am really

I really am really enjoying this so far.  Of course Sam and Mike are blowing them out of the water, I have to agree with the theists about their idea of the future of BELIEF.  To them, the future of God belief is a personal, individual and unique concept.  Seems that people are tending to define all of these concepts for themselves instead of listening to orthodox sources.  People are designing there own new drug.  And science is winning the battle.  Deepak is proof of that.  The God of the Gaps is getting smaller and smaller.  I celebrate this debate.

 deepak is taken seriously

deepak is taken seriously neither by the majority of theists nor the majority of scientists.  the only people who take him seriously are the kind of people who watch oprah fanatically.  he's just the kind of modern half-baked mystic who doesn't even have the courage to take his dedication to the same level as antony, ramana maharshi, etc.

"I have never felt comfortable around people who talk about their feelings for Jesus, or any other deity for that matter, because they are usually none too bright. . . . Or maybe 'stupid' is a better way of saying it; but I have never seen much point in getting heavy with either stupid people or Jesus freaks, just as long as they don't bother me. In a world as weird and cruel as this one we have made for ourselves, I figure anybody who can find peace and personal happiness without ripping off somebody else deserves to be left alone. They will not inherit the earth, but then neither will I. . . . And I have learned to live, as it were, with the idea that I will never find peace and happiness, either. But as long as I know there's a pretty good chance I can get my hands on either one of them every once in a while, I do the best I can between high spots."

So far, Deepak and the other

So far, Deepak and the other lady have had two chances to speak and they have not even *said* anything.  And people clap!  "Believe in everything, and be happy!!!!"   *clap-clap-clap"

Bleh.

Everything makes more sense now that I've stopped believing.

I watched to hole thing last

I watched to hole thing last night, good debate.  The one thing I'm happy about Is Deepak and the woowoo lady are atleast not alligning themselves with any silly/violent holy books.  Deepak especially says multiple times that that is old religion, and we need to look towards a new style belief that includes science.  Well atleast that's a reasonably good thing.  Still believing things without evidence, but atleast they've moved past outdated holybooks and admit the rest of the world needs to move on aswell.  If this is the newer debate (Athiesm versus new somewhat scientific god belief instead of christianity verses athiesm) I think progression is being made.

Deepak bumbles through the hole thing and then gets made a real fool by the physicist audience member that questions his understanding of what he claimed.  The woohoo lady says some good things, one great statement I forgot where it is, but is a total space case that mostly just quotes poetic sayings.  In all they both came off cooky.

Part 11, about 5 minutes in

Part 11, about 5 minutes in is the best question and answer in the whole thing.

I am a bit surprised though, they had two hippie woo people on facing those guys and an audience of scientists...it was bound to get ugly.

I was very entertained though.

Or the part 12.  Lol.  I guess I just like it all.

I want that ladies job though.  Apparently she gets paid to quote irrelevant poetry and give random anecdotes.

Lol yeah throughout the whole thing she never made a coherent statement about what she believed. It was literally just impressions of people she met and quotes from William Blakes poetry. I thought to myself I can do that why am I not getting paid for it. LOL! It was a good debate overall very entertaining.

It seems overall Deepaks

It seems overall Deepaks form of magical thinking is beningn and doesn't really affect anyone negatively. Most of the people I know who follow Deepaks work never really grasp anything of substance they just think he is a great writer and feel better when they read his work.

I want to know her name so I can look up other interviews.  I have a theory that she will say the exact same thing for any topic.

"Ma'am, what do you think about the Genocide in Africa?:  To be, or not to be, that *is* the question, isn't it?  I look forward to a future where humanity unites! under a banner of truly generalized spirituality and unspecific love!  One time, while I was in France, I helped a man walk his dog!"  *clap-clap-clap*

"Ma'am, what would you like as your main course tonight?: To be, or not to be, that *is* the question, isn't it?  I look forward to a future where humanity unites! under a banner of truly generalized spirituality and unspecific love!  One time, while I was in France, I helped a man walk his dog!" *clap-clap-clap*
