Night at the Creation Presentation
well went to the creation presentation last night, no fireworks or anythinglike that, in fact was sort of a dud, though interesting
there was only about 12-15 people there, and all of them went to the church except for myself, the presentation was basically a look at the first chapters of genesis, the first seven days and an explanation of each
i learned that yes they were 24 hour days, not metaphors for longer periods of time, that when god separated the waters from the waters and put one in the sky that that was the atmosphere and there was also a "canopy" around Earth, and depending on the theory either made of water or ice, had an illustration of it, sorta reminded me of like a fucking shield from Star Trek
when God created the earth on the 1st day it was a water world, and of course the plants and shit on day 2 then the sun and moon on day 3
some swipes taken at evolution, "they use to say we came from monkeys now they talk about common ancestors" *shows picture of a money on overhead* "does that look like a relative of yours? LOLS!
some BS about fossils being evidence of creation, how all the intermediate hominid fossils are either entirely human or entirely monkey
you know run of the mill shit
didnt get a chance to take any photos, nor did i record anything (i talked 1 on 1 with the guy afterwards for a while and didnt feel it wouldhave been appropriate to record our conversation)
asked him some questions about stuff, he had issues with common ancestry, talked about how alot of the intermediate fossils (archaeoptryx, tiktaalik) were fakes, talked about how radiometric dating was flawed, he didnt think the universe was 14 billion years old nor the earth 4.5 billion
he was a pretty nice guy though ad the conversation was civil, said he wasnt about trying to tell people what to think just throwing information out there and letting peoplejudge it for themselves (sorta BS i guess, but he was preaching to choir mostly with the exception of me)
overall was an interesting evening on that front
there was a rather awkward moment, after the presentation and before i talked to the guy, a lady came up to me and shook my hand, well after introductions come to find out she knowsmy parents (not friends or anything but knows them) and i used to play little league and peewee wrestle with her oldest son back in the day, she was happy that i was there and asked me if i had a church and that i should come back and they have sunday school and all this and that, trying to bepolite as possible i just mentioned that i "wasnt really a church person", dont think she got the hint though
after my chat with the guy heasked if i wanted to go downstairs with the other people for some refreshments, said i couldnt because i was supposed to get ahold of a friend when i was done (which was true), but also i just didnt really wanna have people asking me to come to church or anyof that
i did however pick up loads of material, handouts and little magazine type things from there, probably like 30, so ill take photos of all the material andpost those, all the shit is from answersingenesis.org (and some from the creation institute or something) and alot of it was written by some dude named Ken Ham (an apt last name IMHO), stuff is interesting i think because it makes me think through my positions and think about why what i know is true is true, so i think itll be helpful because some of the pamphlets are filled with scientific type stuff (no doubt skewed and twisted and out of context) but helpful in that now i know the exact type of shit i should be looking up to debunk the crap
so overall an interesting evening, enlightening in some respects, and made my head hurt in alot of others
(as a side note in the very first pamphlet i read i saw some quote mining, the famous darwin quote about eyes evolving being absurd, there was some other quotes, by stephen jay gould and some other people thatim sure were taken out of context as well, ill photograph all the materials and post them, some are ridiculous, some pretty funny, and others offensive in the normal way christians views usually are)

Neat, thanks for sharing.
Did you get the impression that any of the people at the meeting would have been able to make a coherent defense of creationism, or even had a solid handle on the creationist talking points?
I used to get riled up at this stuff, but it just makes me a bit sad now. Anecdotally, creationism seems to be intellectually sick, not many thinkers are behind it anymore.
Everything makes more sense now that I've stopped believing.
i doubt the folks there to watch could, they were just regular people that go to the church, so they were their basically to be "yes men" and be awed, not the type that could debate the points
i talked to the presenter afterwards, trying to explain anything to him gave me a headache, it was clear that nothing i said would change his mind, one of those things where you mention something, like radiometric dating for instance, and he asks how do you know that works and bring out BS examples of how its false, then you explain how it works and why the examples he used are shit and he asks something else like how do we know the laws of physics have always been the same, etc
it amazes me sometimes, youd figure if people wanted to argue against something theyd atleast know what it is
the bible stuff was just funny, and pathetic, but what do you expect when all the info is from answersingenesis.org
i grabbed a bunch of the pamphlets and shit they had on display, i took photos of them all, just gotta grab my camera and upload them at some point, some of them are ridiculous and some are pretty fucking offensive in the normal christian way
alot of it was written by a dude named Ken Ham, who PZ Myers has ripped apart on his blog, so i guess you have an idea of whats in it
ill post the shit as soon as i can
I was just curious.
I was raised as a fundamentalist creationist, so I heard most of this stuff as a youngster.
