Antigone, By Brian37
Antigone, By Brian37
He's my brother
Are not we all
Cruel to outsiders
They shall fall
Why cant we
Look past divisions
See flesh as flesh
And death as death
War after war
We defend our own
Yet from mothers and sisters
We all came
Of labels and nations
Our flags we wave
Outsiders will rot
Under buzzards and flies
And what has changed
Death after death
War after war
Nothing
Our sisters cry
When bombs birst
Borders mean nothing
Upon our birth
Why is cruelty
Our species norm
Of Antigone
Compassion learned
From the first stone
To bash a skull
Over power and resources
And nothing more
If intellect
Matured faster than weapons
A time would arise
When humanity abandons them
Our world too small
To conquer more
SHOUT ANTIGONE
UNTILL THEY HEAR
DNA and evolution
Already prove
The same past
All have come
And all our future
Is clad in iron
Whatever epitaph
For all are written
In as such
None escape
Antigone's cry
Should be old age
A better world
It would be
If this play
Had no inspiration
Antigone
I HATE YOU
For having to write
These much needed prose
YOU BITCH
Slutty traitor
Don't emasculate me
In front of the world
You burried my brother
Who turned on me
Incestuous treason
To my tribe
HOW DARE YOU ANTIGONE
Criticize Bush
For water boarding
Or the Geniva Convention
PRESUME GUILT
KILL BY DEFAULT
FUCK OUTSIDERS
LEAVE THEM TO ROT
I am sorry to say
Antigone
This may not wane
Despite your message
Our brothers die
In all generations
In all of history
In all nations
The only bastards
That I see
Are those who ignore you
Antigone

For those who don't know Antigone is the Greek play of the Oedipus trilogies.
Antigone is the tragic hero. She is the daughter of Oedipus and has a sister and two brothers. Her brothers end up on opposite sides of a war and both die battling each other.
The play is about her conflict of burying her brother who ended up the enemy of the state. In real life, in that antiquity that was considered blasphemy to lend aid a burial to the enemy dead. You left them to rot.
Antigone in this play, defies the state AND the gods and buries her brother.
THE following section of my poem was not blasting her, but portraying the attitude of the state in anyone lending aid to the enemy.
"Slutty traitor
Don't emasculate me
In front of the world
You buried my brother
Who turned on me
Inscestious treason
To my tribe "
END QUOTE
This is unfortunately the attitude even in the modern world. We end up on opposite sides of an issue and it ends up being "us vs them". This play's intent, and what modern humanity still fails to see, are the shades of gray and what the character Antigone saw, that in the end we are all human.
