North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has died at the age of 69, state-run television has announced.
His death was announced in an emotional statement read out on national television.
The announcer, wearing black, said he had died on Saturday of physical and mental over-work.
The BBC's Lucy Williamson in Seoul says his death will cause huge shock waves across North Korea.
Kim Jong-il has been the leader of the impoverished communist country since the death of his father Kim Il-sung in 1994.
He suffered a stroke in 2008 and was absent from public view for several months.
His designated successor is believed to be his third son, Kim Jong-woon, who is thought to be in his late 20s.

Well merry christmass to North Korea. But remember the very dead Kim Il Song is the real leader Kim Jong Il was just filling in untill he returned from the dead. According to Christopher Hitchens North Korea is the worlds only Necrocity[lead by a dead person] . I can't help but think how joyous Mr.Hitchens would feel to know that shit head died the day after Christopher did.

If man was formed from dirt, why is there still dirt?
Well. Cool. One down. Too many more to go.
I'd like to be alive when the people revolt, though, N. Korea keeps all the people malnourished. They probably can't hold a stick in defiance.
I'll always remember the piece done on N. Korea (I think it was CBS) but they went over and the house they visited was with a family that reminded me of the robots on the Disney ride. The were very skinny and you could tell all the items in their house were brand new. They didn't even know how to use the television. Pictures all over the wall were of the "glorious leader". They spoke as if they had been programmed.
I also remember how the state run television announced that their soccer (futbol) team had one the world cup. The regular game which they lost 4-0 (it was really bad) was cut short and people had to listen to a play-by-play from the state run radio station.
(edit)
Oh, yeah. I remember the 1985 Chicago Bears had gone over there to the DMZ. It was like Perry, McMahon and Singletary (I think). I think it was McMahon who had this "1985 Super Bowl Champions" with him and they were in the room (the actual DMZ room where there is a line down the middle and across the table separating north from south), so McMahon took the sticker, crawled under the table and stuck in under the table on the North Korean side.
I wonder if it is still there?
Crazy mother fucker, good riddance...
Too bad his third son is probably just as insane.
Not sure if this is a good or bad thing yet.
Well, thats what happens when you have the last name Ill.
Bye bye Kim see ya, wouldn't wanna be ya.

QFT.
On the face of it, a blithering idiot with dreams of grandeur and far too much power for anyone's good is gone.
On the other hand, it's generally better with the enemy you know than the one who takes over from him.

This is not a good thing.
The heir apparent is probably going to have to prove he's a ballsey, tough leader. Which means some South Koreans are going to become collatoral damage when he shows how much of a man he is.
I mean he's going to have to do something to consolidate his power. After that's all settled though, well who knows.
His Swiss friends that went to school with him say he's a good guy. *shrugs*

I still think it's only a matter of time before China has had enough of NK and walks all over the country.
This lad might change things for the better, but being a tough guy will probably just get himself killed. I've seen signs that China has been running out of patience with NK before Ill's death. They aren't likely to tolerate a cowboy now that he's out of the way.
Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if China used this opportunity to bully the new guy into submission, making NK part of China in all but name (perhaps even in name). It'd be a brilliant move on their part. And it's what I'd do in their place.

No, I don't think that's correct. He has to show he's a tough guy. Otherwise he will be seen as a weak and ineffectual leader. He'd get his ass desposed of.
He's going to launch a minor attack on South Korea. Maybe a few missiles into a city. Take out a ship in their navy. Something. He's probably already mulling in his head right now what the target is going to be.
I'd bet cold, hard cash on it.
Now what China does I don't really know enough to form a confident opinion of.

I agree. Something very rash will be done by this "Great Successor" in order to prove his worth. Otherwise there will be political unrest, and there's no way in hell he will be able to hold power if any of the army's high officers go against him. He's a Four Star General who has never seen combat or a war. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
I smell a war coming......I see words like 'Regime Change'....words like 'Axis of Evil'........Yep....has that odor.
