On trolls
I was having a discussion with a friend on how some people he was gaming with had ended up being people he had no interest in associating with after observing their behaviour towards a mentally challenged individual. He was concerned he'd been a bad judge of character. I said something to him, which he suggested was quotable. So lets put it through peer review shall we?

Briefly, Know your enemy THAT is the best way to intelligently find a way to best respond to them or you can choose to ignore the issue(s). Whatever the case the trick is not to allow them to win.

Vaset I don't think life is as simple as a quote, nor do I think anger is always bad. I have said which is similar to this quote, we DO have to remember that we all are the same species. It is when we fail to do so the dark side of our evolution can cause us to treat others as sub human. We are all capable of doing both good and bad because we are all part of the same evolution.

Please re-read his statement and show me where he said "your said this or that".
I see him saying that he "thinks this" and he "thinks that".
Stating his opinion or feeling about your statements is an opinion and nothing more.
I'm not sure this is true for true for the reasons you believe.
If you ran another (exaggerated) test where you left a person alone in a room with a puppy and told them they could torture the puppy if they wanted and no-one would ever find out, would they torture the puppy? If they have an innate darkness confined only by societal opinion then you'd expect they probably would. I doubt that many puppies would be tortured though.
I think people troll on forums because they don't consider the forum important (unlike the welfare of a puppy), and so don't care if they bruise the feelings of others on it. And it only harms those who allow themselves to be harmed by it.. there is no intrinsic harm in trolling.
Your quote really only applies to people with low levels of empathy - i.e borderlines, narcissists and psychopaths. People with high empathy generally don't want to harm others for fun. I wonder why you think this quote of yours applies generally.. would you consider that you have a generally low level of empathy?
He directed his response to me and proceeded to lecture me on subject matter which had nothing to do with the topic or anything I've ever said. If you want to act as stupid as he is feel free, but don't expect me to not point it out. I'm hardly the only one who sees it. You're just making more of a fool of yourself with every word you type.

That's not really a good analogy, because most people are generally not attracted to actual suffering and torture, and for most people, they're more able to get even more enjoyment out of just playing with the puppy. Plus its cleaner, and they don't have to deal with any possible aftermath, the only aftermath of playing with a Happy Puppy is the happy puppy loves you even more and plays even more.
Not having to deal with the aftermath is also part of what makes people so vicious on the Internet. There's an unwritten rule that what's on the Internet doesn't matter. This is where the "The Internet : Serious Business" Meme came from. This gives people a lot of incentive to be vicious because they can always retreat behind the "No harm Done" defense. Furthermore, they generally don't have to see any tangible effects of their bullying. Even if the recipient, kills themselves, that just means they stop posting as far as the troll is concerned. Any mental breakdown they suffer is translated through the glory of text into simple, easily digested, sterile words.

The beginning of this topic (the top first third on the 1st page) made me realize how many of these topics become A GIANT ROCHACH blot and end up telling more about the individual than anything strictly related to the larger issue.
Let me get this straight. You asked for a "peer review" and yet when some one posts their opinion you immediately go on the defense, shout "strawman" and then proceed to name call any one who either speaks up in defense of the other person because their opinion differs from your opinion?

Irrespective of one's propensities, No one benefits from Trolling, their behaviour only serves to be disruptive and steps outside the boundaries which allow for discourse to have any sort of chance of taking place (in the first place).
Most boards generally have Trolls expelled really for the sake of the others, instead of indulging them (facts of life). Usually the process is too quick to be considered fair in any sense of the word in other boards.
p.s. : Amenities (double meaning) of trollville, let's say, not offered enough, IMO.
