New museum says dinosaurs were on Noah's Ark

By Andrea Hopkins 1 hour, 54 minutes ago

PETERSBURG, Ky (Reuters) - Like many modern museums, the newest U.S. tourist attraction includes some awesome exhibits -- roaring dinosaurs and a life-sized ship. But only at the Creation Museum in Kentucky do the dinosaurs sail on the ship -- Noah's Ark, to be precise.

The Christian creators of the sprawling museum, unveiled on Saturday, hope to draw as many as half a million people each year to their state-of-the-art project, which depicts the Bible's first book, Genesis, as literal truth.

While the $27 million museum near Cincinnati has drawn snickers from media and condemnation from U.S. scientists, those who believe God created the heavens and the Earth in six days about 6,000 years ago say their views are finally being represented.

"What we've done here is to give people an opportunity to hear information that is not readily available ... to challenge them that really you can believe the Bible's history," said Ken Ham, president of the group Answers in Genesis that founded the museum.

Here exhibits show the Grand Canyon took just days to form during Noah's flood, dinosaurs coexisted with humans and had a place on Noah's Ark, and Cain married his sister to people the earth, among other Biblical wonders.

Scientists, secularists and moderate Christians have pledged to protest the museum's public opening on Monday. An airplane trailing a "Thou Shalt Not Lie" banner buzzed overhead during the museum's opening news conference.

Opponents argue that children who see the exhibits will be confused when they learn in school that the universe is 14 billion years old rather than 6,000.

"Teachers don't deserve a student coming into class saying 'Gee Mrs. Brown, I went to this fancy museum and it said you're teaching me a lie,"' Dr. Eugenie Scott, executive director of the National Center for Science Education, told reporters before the museum opened.

A Gallup poll last year showed almost half of Americans believe that humans did not evolve but were created by God in their present form within the last 10,000 years.

Three of 10 Republican presidential candidates said in a recent debate that they did not believe in evolution.

"Married" as in "had sex with." Well sheeeeeeeit! That's likely to bring all kinds of comfort to the rednecks who'll make up the lion's share of visitors to this abomination and insult to the intelligence of Americans.

With utterly delusional institutions like this becoming increasingly more publicized and prolific it's no wonder other countries find us laughable at best and dangerously insane at worst. There are actually adult Americans who believe that at one time life on earth was like "Land of the Lost!" It's shameful. Only a fucking imbecile of the highest order would accept such patently ridiculous claims as consistent with reality... or even being possible anywhere but in one's imagination!

Invisible friends are for children and psychopaths.

The absolute scary thing is that this is the type of organization we're dealing with. One that can spend $27,000,000.00 on a "museum" to perpetuate a lie.

Do you realize what a medical research lab could do with that kind of funds? But the fundies (pun intended) would rather spread a bad lie than try and find a way to ease human suffering.

I read about this the other

I read about this the other day at skeptic.com.

http://skeptic.com/eskeptic/07-05-23.html

A guy from skeptic toured the museum and wrote this artical about it. I'm not sure whether I am supposed to laugh, scratch my head, or cry.

"...it offers a disturbing progression of exhibits that move the visitor from the “Cave of Sorrows,” where Eve eats from the Tree of Knowledge, to “The First Shedding of Blood,” where images and text explain how animals began to suffer and die after God’s wrath at the fallen Adam and Eve."

"I asked Ham if just a handful of dinosaurs wouldn’t be too big (even in smaller genera numbers) to accommodate on the ark. “We want people to understand that of all the fossil skeletons found around the earth, the average size of dinosaurs is only the size of a sheep,” he responded. “We also want to point out that dinosaurs probably don’t have a growth spurt until after five years, so they could be quite small when young. Therefore, it’s not ridiculous to think that two of every kind were on the ark.”"

"The socially conservative political stance of the museum is prevalent in almost every exhibit, but the coup de grace is the “Culture in Crisis” exhibit. Here the museum gives us a “natural history” of the breakdown of the American family. Visitors are invited to look through three windows of a contemporary American home. Videos loop to show two young boys looking at porn on the computer and experimenting with drugs. Another window shows a young girl crying, surrounded by abortion pamphlets. And finally the parents are shown arguing. A recreated church facade stands at the other end of the room, but the foundation of the church has been damaged by a large wrecking-ball labeled “millions of years.” The signage explains that the cause of all this misery is our move away from Genesis and toward the scientific ideas of geology and evolution. Ideas about an old earth make people feel small and insignificant, so naturally they do drugs and have abortions."

They Spent 27 MIllion Dollars on Trying To Convince People That

The new Creation Museum opened this weekend.

I can't help but think about how many starving third world kids 27 million could feed, or how much research towards a cure for cancer that could fund.

This makes me sick, and not just because I'm an atheist.

Not only is the whole thing

Not only is the whole thing pathetic and sickening, but extremely hypocritical, even for christians. These people call themselves bible literalists, and yet they somehow missed all of the passages that might direct them to use $27 million a bit more wisely. Clothe the naked? Feed the hungry? Shelter the homeless? Nah, let's build an ostentatious pile of crap that provides no real benefit to anybody except inflating the sense of self-importance experienced by the builders. I hope the the whole thing gets wiped out by a tornado.

Whenever I see something

Whenever I see something like this it makes me think that the thing that's really missing from schools is training in critical thinking.

If schools would spend just a couple of weeks each grade teaching how to analyze and judge the value of arguements and evidence, a lot of this kind of thinking would just go away.

Why are they glad and sad and bad?
I do not know, go ask your dad.

The thing is (sad as this may be), the way they see it, we need to pray and give ourselves to God as suffering is caused by sin and we must repent.  Not dedicate money to curing disease and eliminate early death from a lot of areas.  NO, must pray..

This is some of the main issues I have with religion.  Goes to the stem cell concept.  We would rather stop progress of humanity to pray to the sky daddy so that all can be well, when the money thats dedicated to this shit (such as these abominations) could be given to good causes.  The sad thing is, most of these people who give all this money will never see how wasteful it is.

This was my answer to a

This was my answer to a post in DIGG comments asking:

Q. "What the fuck is wrong with these people?"

A. "Cultural and institutionalized retardation, with a lot of money.
The problem isn't just fanatical religious types. I meet the same type in business all the time.
These are people who aren't smart, have no capacity for critical thinking, yet they don't believe anyone else is smarter than them.
They really believe that 'smarter' people are faking it to make them look stupid.
That leads them to believe they are just as capable as 'smart' people of figuring out the answers to all the big questions.
(I'm talking about the people who created this monstrosity, the business leaders, the politicians, the wealthy who all believe this shit, and who brought it into being with their arrogance and righteousness.)

If the intellectual elite ran the world, this sort of thing (creationist museum) wouldn't exist and we would have progressed culturally over the last 2000 years.
Unfortunately, leadership is more often a charisma, popularity and beauty contest.

Responsible and intelligent governance is even more of a myth than the beliefs behind this grotesque travesty.

I fear for the minds of each and every person to enter that place"

People like Ken Ham are the most dangerous people in the world.

We can laugh about the "Kentucky joke Museum", but what about the future generations of kids that will be brought up on this stuff. That's scary.

And while I'm on the subject (sorry if i'm ranting but I need to vent this somewhere) I come from England originally (but now live in Sydney Australia) and I follow the news there.

I was proud to see England had a high atheism rate, until I saw what Tony Blair was doing with education.

He was/is letting people with shit loads of money build schools (which in theory is a great altruistic gesture) but then he lets them dictate the f_ing curriculum.

Now due to one very rich and retarded car salesman, creationist schools are popping up everywhere.

Does anyone else think this is maybe the deep link between Blair and Bush?

Is this a big problem? well probably not now as they are all relatively new, but after a few years of fresh retarded creationists being pumped out, yes there will be a problem, and that will be Blairs true lagacy, christian fundamentalist creationist Britain.

Phewww... vented...... If you got this far, thanks for bearing with me.

In the last few years Blair

In the last few years Blair has become seemingly more religious publicly. His trust school system is a sham. It lets people like Vardy open religious crackpot schools whilst they are still technically state schools!! Yeah, my country doesn't have as high a religiosity rate as America, (but then again nowhere in the West does) but Blair's schools might change that. I really hope Brown gets rid of them as Prime Minister (which he is definately going to be). In many respects Brown is no better than Blair, but I do feel he's more secularist.

Welcome Simon66.

I wonder when they are going to install the giant statue of Jerry Falwell. He would have recorded abuse that he would spew at specific intervals. That way it would have more hot air than Old Faithful. "Hate the Jews! Hate the Gays! Hate anyone who is not you! And as Jesus said, 'Love thy neighbor.'"

Creation Museum Opens

Local, national, and international news programs covered today's opening of the "creation museum." I'm posting the websites of both sides below, but I have to say I loved the description of the museum by one of the protestors. He described the museum as "organized ignorance" and as a "Disneyland version of creation."

Now let's be fair to Jerry Fatwa (or was it Jerry Fatarse?) I don't think he ever said anything bad about Jews.

Regardless, I'd go to that museum just for the Falwell statue, if they made one. Dude was a great comedian.

Discover did an article about it a few months back.

"...they must—spend their lives, and brains, trying to think of ways that patently false ideas can be made to seem, if not actually true, at least not quite so patently false. It is, I fear, a doomed exercise, but it's a heroic one as well, it pains me to admit."

I'm not sure what Maddox is getting at when he deems the creators (no pun) "heroic" in their efforts, but he does a fine job exposing the idiocy.

27 million dollars for a museum

Well, this is just a little rant regarding the amount of money spent to build a temple of lies.  The creation museum costs about an average of 27 million dollars to build.  What irks me about this is the simple fact that religious leaders and churches have waaaay too much disposable income.  First off, churches are tax exempt so any money made, well...is money made.  Now, this leads me to the issue of altruism and church's morality.  It seems a bit peculiar that religious leaders would rather spend money on a "museum" rather than, say, feed the homeless.  What this does is put in question the very morality of the church and its religious leaders, in this case the evangelical fundamentalists.  It seems as if the goal of evangelicals is not, in fact, help other people, but persuade other people to join them.  Well...seems cultish? Well it is...a cult with a bit more disposable income.

I find it extremely hypocritical for the religious right (fundamentalists) to call us atheists immoral when they are throwing away 27 million dollars on a building, that is, above anything else, a false temple of lies.  Since when does god want temples built?  Where does it say in the bible...thou shalt build a museum where dinosaurs are shown playing with children?  Wouldn't it behoove a christian who truly believes in the goodness of god and his/her religion to spend that money on feeding the homeless, or building houses of refuge for battered and abused women?  No...what these guys do is spend 27 million dollars on a building with animatronic dinosaurs...to show how the young the earth is.  Never mind the power of god...obviously it's the power of money that persuades people to believe.  These people are nothing but heads of cults who would rather turn a profit and enslave the minds of our youth in order to achieve their fascist goal of theocracy.  They want to rule..they are lusting power and money and control.  This is what these people truly want.  It is disgusting.  Imagine a world where science is no longer based on empircal evidence, but on faith.

Imagine that.....  pray that the cancer will subside....pray that malaria will disappear....pray that HIV will be intelligently designed to help us instead of killing us.  Ah..who cares so long as the Pat Robertsons and the Jerry Fallwells are fat and rich.  And those in the middle, the moderates..you are to blame as much for this as the rest of the fundies because your ideologies allow for this to happen and you sit idly by ignoring it.    This is indeed scary.

How is this suprising

How is this suprising anyone?  The National Association of Evangelicals fired their leader when he tried to talk about more then gay bashing and zygote rights.  Look at Pat Robertson and his various schemes/scams from diamond mines to protein powder. Jim Baker and his fraud, Ted Haggart and Jimmy Swaggert with their hypocrisy, Orel Roberts and his claim that if x dollars were not raised God was going to call him home (I prayed for the mail sytem to fail month...I do worship a God and his name is Irony), Ralph Reed and his shady deals with Abrhamoff.  The list can go on for days.

The leaders of the Religious Right subscibe to a very Machiavellian view of politics and this 'museum' is just one more way to keep the population superstitious and ignorant.
