Bookstore Chain Adds an "Atheism/Agnosticism" section to Their Stores
Bookstore Chain Adds an "Atheism/Agnosticism" section to Their Stores If you've ever been frustrated in a search for books on nonbelief in your local bookstore or annoyed by their inclusion in the comparative religion section, Borders Books has remedied the situation. "Atheism and Agnosticism" has been added as a new section for the works of Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens, and many others. Very, very cool! It will be nice to see a separate section for those who 'lack' belief. I hate seeing atheism next to "A Case For Christ", lack of belief does not belong in the religion section.
I noticed that a couple weeks ago at a local Borders. It was a sizable amount of books too, about three shelves worth. I thought I had died and gone to heaven.
you know, I always have preferred borders over barnes and noble, and this seals it
I think this deserves a little celebration. Congratulations to all of the atheists that made this possible!

If I may make a request for one of the mods to put "Theist" over their avatar.

This is cool!
Enjoy it while it lasts - soon enough, you'll be having protests and whatnot from some conservative Christians.
I hope that when the world comes to an end I can breathe a sigh of relief, because there will be so much to look forward to.
I would actually be surprised if people protested. After all, there are entire Christian bookstores. One section in a huge chain store is hardly anything at all.

You're kidding, right? I've heard of Christians boycotting bookstores because the photography & art sections have books w/ "pornography" in it.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Really? protesting photography? Sigh. I know that they protest books in schools and stuff which is totally ridiculous. I forget how many crazies are out there sometimes. No one here in Jersey would ever think of protesting an atheism section in a bookstore.

I was so happy to have found this in Borders. It was always so embarrassing going through the "faith-based" fiction section looking for freethought books lest someone see me and think I'm a closeted fundy.
The last time I had to look through a theist section to find an atheist book, this employee girl (sporting a really sparkly cross necklace) volunteered that she had read most of the books in the Christian section, and asked if I needed help finding something.
My mouth worked a little faster than my brain, and I said, "Yes... kindling?"
She didn't approve of my answer.

Books about atheism
Just the other day me and a friend were at Borders, and I was looking at the bestsellers to see if they had any atheism books, and all they had was one copy of God Is Not Great by Hitchens, so I flipped through it and told my friend I needed to buy it sometime. Low and behold, right behind me, one of the workers was waiting to load the shelves with a whole cart of the book. That was cool, a whole cart full of God Is Not Great. I wonder what bookstore employees think when they encounter books that challenge their beliefs. This guy didn't have a smile on his face.
Do You Worship an Evil God?
It's all about presence.
There will be tons of opposition, but when enough atheists demand equality, the sheer force of numbers will force the hand of the courts, and theists will just have to live without their theocracy.
At least that's how it will happen in my little happy fantasy land.
