Humanistic Jones wanders into sickness on the interwebs - MarryOurDaughter.org

So here I am, cruising through the intertubes, clicking random links, just generally seeing where the flow of data takes me. By some strange trail of links I come to a sight called Marry Our Daughter. Now this really caught my eye for a couple of reasons, which I will now go into in text form as my lack of a webcam prevents me from ranting in video...

1) The reason the sight was started - from their own "About Us" page, "Marry Our Daughter is an introduction service assisting those following the Biblical tradition of arranging marriages for their Daughters." That's right folks, good old biblical traditions. We all know how well all of those work out for our daughters, hell, women in general.

2) Girls are proposed to by way of a bid - Now I'm one to view a ridiculous number of things as funny in certain situations, but while I can think of up to 5 "get back in the kitchen" jokes at a given time, I can't find anything funny about this. These families are literally putting young girls as young as 13 up on the auction block for random men to bid on. This they as well back up by way of good ol' Biblical Tradition "...the Bride Price is a custom of long standing, mentioned many times in the Bible, and as such is a protected religious practice." You know, alot of things are mentioned many times in the bible, rape, murder, killing the infidel, pedophilia, incest, genocide, slavery... I could go on, but none of these get the status of protected religious practice around here anymore. Why should the wholesale auction of young girls be as such.

3) The amazing anonymity granted to bidders - IF by the will of athe I ever decided to auction off my daughter, I personally would like to know as much as I can about the bidder before I even so much as agree to a meeting. What someone can expect from this service is a 1000 word essay. Expressly listed under the don'ts....

"Don’t include your full name." - no chance of a background check here... you send a first name and last initial and your email address, that's all

"Do not specify your age, except in a range such as “20s, 30s, 40s, 50s” etc." - yeah, 59 year old man seeking 13 year old girl... oh I mean... 50's

I will end by saying that not many things have made me physically ill from anger in a while... this was one of them...

That's some sick shit. But

That's some sick shit. But I just saw a commercial last night telling kids (or telling parents to tell kids), or maybe just girls (I didn't pay much attention, until it caught my ear near the end), to wait until marriage. There's nothing wrong with waiting, but I just find it annoying to have religious groups telling people how to raise their kids.

UPDATE:  I got suspicious after viewing the site.  It's FAKE!

“Our 15 year old daughter

“Our 15 year old daughter Mary wasn’t very popular and did nothing but mope around the house bringing everybody down, so we decided to marry her off through your site. Now our house is a lot cheerier and we love our new swimming pool and Jaccuzi!  We’ve told our youngest that when she turns 15 we’re going to marry her off too!"

This has to be a joke? Right!? Why not just put her on EBay? If you look at the "adds" very few of the potential "brides" actually have biblical names " Britney" as you would expect of religious maniacs. So either the "vendors" are not so devout as the site would have you believe, or it's a wind-up.

It does appear however, that in almost all US states mariage, with parental consent is legal as young as 13. "Hey it's in the Bible so it must be okay"!

Ne te confundum illigitimi!!

Oh wow... that's good.

Oh wow... that's good.  Not real.  Seriously, really good.

The man does raise a good point with the site, and I'm guessing that my reaction to it was about what the site's creator was hoping for.  It is in fact legal to marry off girls this young all over the US.  More proof that some laws need to be regularly reviewed for modern relavency and decency.  This one really jumped out at me after the whole debacle with Warren Jeffs and his child marrying mormon cult.

Now here's the question, just as any parody of creationism as science will eventually be championed by an actual creationist as an accurate assessment of their beliefs, how long until there are christian's fighting for the right to sell their 13 year old daughters as a "protected biblical tradition"

If you need a real website to make fun of here's

I know the guy who runs it and he is slime.

Here's some of the eligibility requirements.

"1. is a marriage-minded* single, (See flag-notes below.)

2. is at least sixteen years old,

Marriage minded 16 year olds or old guys interested in marrying 16 year olds?

Here's a small profile I did on the guy:
