Mr. Blue Laws And I

The first amendment of the U.S. Constitution is one of the most commonly quoted document entry in America. It’s an all-time favorite of both high school and college students alike. Freedom of speech, of expression, and of belief in Jesus. Now what about the lack thereof?

The separation of Church and state is one of the oldest myths in American history. Although unnoticed by those who are fortunate enough to live in a culturally-diverse area such as New York, the invisible hand of religion holds the legislative pen in some places within the United States.

It was on a Sunday, around the latter part of December, 2007, when I found myself staring at a yellow sign hanging just about 3 feet above the ground that reads: “WAL-MART SUPERCENTER, DUE TO SOUTH CAROLINA BLUE LAWS, THIS SECTION IS CLOSED UNTIL 1:30PM.” Irritated and slightly offended, I felt my insides recoil and my mind infuriated with anger. Disappointed, my girlfriend and I headed towards the closest RadioShack, then Walgreens, and finally some office supply store I’ve never heard of before; I felt defeated. It wasn’t until we finally decided to head for the hotel that I spent the next fifteen minutes in the car ranting and complaining about how New York doesn’t need to follow some ridiculous law written by a chaplain. That evening, when I finally arrived at my warm cozy bedroom in New York, feeling a bit nostalgic as I meticulously examined the photographs in my camera, I came across the image I snapped during my only moment of inconvenience that week and it suddenly hit me: I’ve never fully appreciated the benefits of living among a diverse group of freethinkers until that day.

When I moved to virginia in

When I moved to virginia in 1985, everything used to closed on sunday, but like the grociery store. They changed that I think in 86. I don't remember. But you still can't get booze on sunday. You should be in church, not drinking I guess.

So what's to stop someone

So what's to stop someone from stepping over the line and getting what they need?  Will they actually not ring it up at the checkout?

I know what you mean about the laws tho, utterly rediculous.  Just think, if Huckabee manages to get into office the whole country can be just like that! Frown

Yeah, here in Texas you

Yeah, here in Texas you can't buy liquor on Sundays and can't buy beer on Sundays until noon.

On top of that a lot of the counties in Texas are "dry counties" where you can't buy alcoholic drinks anywhere except at some places like bars (Providing you have a county or city issued card).

It's pretty stupid.

God magically stops all people who buy their Bacardi 151 from buying it on Tusday, taking in home and then drinking it on.

How about this assholes, dont drink and drive. Arrest people who get violent weither sober or intoxicated on anything, but stop crossing your fingers with magical times and days pretenting that lifes problems will cease if you make a fictional sacrifice to a fictional being.

You can buy booze on Sunday, in Virginia they call them bars. Beer  can be purchaced as early as 7am any day of the week. Hard liquar is sold by ABC Alcoholic Beverage Control, and just like banks are closed on Sunday.  But bars that surve hard liquer and beer are only, in most munisipalities required to sell more food than booze and must stop serving all alcohol by 1am, at least in Virgina, unless your establisment is an invite only pay to enter club.

Actually, if you have a friend in the military in Virginia, you can get booze on Sunday as well.  Just have him buy it on the base.

There are so much military in Virginia I think a very large percentage of civilians in Virginia would be able to make friends with at least one military member.

What exactly was in that

What exactly was in that section that you couldn't buy? Looks like poofy pillows or something in the background...

Towels on the left, toys on the deep right... seems like an odd placement.

But then again, it could be the fact that the whole store closes down, except for what the state deems "essential" which is probably bathroom supplies and since its the new thing with walmart, grocery isles, pharmacy might be open >.>... great... i can by drugs but i cant "Bring a towel" to my bong party... what a backwords world we live in.

Makes me glad I live in

Makes me glad I live in California.  I seldom drink but if I want one I can get it seven days a week, without a card or license (other than I.D. if you look younger than 35, drinking age is 21 here).  The only time you can't buy booze is between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. CA got away from the blue laws in 1969 or 1970, don't remember which.

Liquor Stores (all of which

Liquor Stores (all of which are by law state owned) and beer distributers (the only place you can legally buy beer other than bars) were closed in Pennsylvania on Sundays until about 3 or 4 years ago. Bars still are, unless they are in restaurants.
