I really liked it for the message's attempt.
Much of the same speech has been made by other secularists. If it weren't for his clinging to the remnant of the bible that he wants to see then he would most definitely be someone with which I could identify.
He speaks about Hosea as being a book about showing us god's love.

one of the examples that is often cited concerning this god's 'love' is
Hosea
13:16 Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up.
I'm sorry but that still sounds 'tribal' to me.
A good challenge for the retired bishop would be to find a book of the old testament that did have the possibility of a 'masked meaning' of god's love.
