There is no god and that's ok.

Don't get me wrong, the idea of an "all loving safety net" sounds nice, but nice and real are two very different things. When you finally realize that there is no god(s) is it common to feel:
- a bit cheated for the time lost pursuing religious matters?
- a new appreciation for each day you have alive?
- an urge to tell very devote theists they're wasting their lives?
- a new view of very devout theists as somewhat gullible? It's like you've seen behind the curtain in Oz and they haven't.
- a new sense of control in one's life? The idea that I have control over the direction of my life and not some deity.
- A new understanding of "Atlas Shrugged". =)

It feels good. I wondered why I never heard god but now know why: there was no one there. There is no god and that's ok. I live by the ethic of reciprocity and try to be kind and forgiving of others. It seems to be a good moral code.

Thanks

I'd say yes to all. By the way, we should all be glad that the God portrayed in the BuyBull doesn't exist.

Personally, I also like the fact that in the end I am the only one responsible for any action/consequence.  Theists seem to love taking the blame, but never take credit for the things that they actually accomplish.  I can understand how atheism would lead to a better understanding of "Atlas Shrugged", but a warning: Pure capitalism is like pure socialism; it's a nice idea, but completely untenable in real life.  I agree with alot of what Ayn Rand says in her books, but even I have lines drawn in the sand.

Yeah, I totally agree with all you just said.  I've had theists get pissed when I take the credit for my own talents!  God certainly didn't spend all those hours practicing voice, writing, drawing and computer repair.  Pthththt.

And as for Atlas Shrugged, Iruka Naminori shrugs. When I was healthy I was very right-wing and very fundy.  I've undergone a lot of physical, emotional and worldview changes.  One thing being disabled has taught me is that the highly capitalistic society we currently have SUCKS when it comes to health care and taking care of people who can't work.  Unfettered capitalism leads to unfettered corporatism where the bottom line is more important than the happiness and health of the people.  Capitalism can't fix health care. (BTW, I'm not endorsing Communism, either.  There's a happy medium that a lot of European countries have found. They're a lot better off than we are in a lot of ways.)

I agree, unfettered

I agree, unfettered capitalism is not only unhealthy, it's incredibly destructive.  I tend to lean toward the more libertarian political spectrum, but I think that a system to support people with disabilities should be in place.  The hard part about any kind of social support system is the abuse that will inevitably develop.  However, fear of misuse should not be cause for inaction.  We just need to develop an intelligent policy toward social welfare.  Which at the moment, we don't have.  I guess we'll need smarter people than me to figure that one out.

Hey...We disagree on

Hey...We disagree on something and (proving sugarless/sugarfree/Splenda..whatever the fuck you want to call her...wrong) we can still have a respectful discussion.

My problem with socialism is simple, need cannot be the only measure of what someone deserves.  Because the only logical conclusion in a system of actual people is for need to become the most desired quality.  Consumers are then more desirable than producers and everything becomes imbalanced and untenable.

I agree that the objectivist economic views are equally untenable.  Completely unrestricted capitalism will lead to nothing but wholesale abuse of any and everything.  But I still tend to lean more towards, at most, a social capitalist model of economics.  That's why I say that people smarter than me need to figure this out.

Wait a fuckin' minute I'm a microbiologist.....I don't give a shit unless it's microscopic...
