Pastor had sex with daughters
August 30, 2007 - 5:37PM
A fundamentalist church pastor had sex with two of his teenage daughters to educate them on how to be good wives, a South Australian court has heard.
The 54-year-old man, who cannot be named, was today sentenced in the SA District Court to eight and a half years jail after pleading guilty to seven counts each of incest and unlawful sexual intercourse.
The court heard that the man had sex with his daughters for nearly a decade from 1991 when they were aged 13 and 15 at the family property.
The sex took place at various locations including in a shearer's shed, a paddock, on the back of a ute and, on one occasion, at the girls' grandparents house.
The man told the court the sex was not about fulfilling his desires but about teaching his daughters how to behave for their husbands when they eventually married, as dictated in scripture.
In sentencing, Judge David Lovell said the misrepresentation of scripture used to justify the abuse of the girls "defied belief", and that he had "hypocritically betrayed" his religion and principles.
"You said the acts were about learning about sex rather than engaging in the acts of sex," Judge Lovell said.
"I do not accept that.
"You treated your daughters as your property ... using them to satisfy and gratify your sexual urges."
Judge Lovell gave full credit for the man's guilty pleas, saying he was genuinely remorseful and had a good chance of rehabilitation as his wife and the church remained supportive.
The man will be eligible for parole in four years.

Of course they remain supportive, they would look like "bad christians" if they didn't.

Maybe he was a big fan of the bible story about Lot, where he gets it on with his two daughters.

The Lot story from the Bible has two messages about God:
1. Offering your virgin daughters to the mob to save two male visitors from being raped is good in the sight of god. So good that you will be the only one saved from the coming destruction.
2. Later having sex with these same two girls is no big deal. Women are chattel anyway.

Wasn't it convenient for the male dominated society of the time (Lot's time and the time Scripture was written) to make that sex the daughters' idea?

Sheesh, you know it's bad to have sex with your daughters. I ruins their retail value when you sell them off into marriage.

Shows the morality and the mentality of some theists.... ugh....
At the very minimum the guy is a liar. Even if we didn't have social issues with incest and sex with minors, does it really take a decade to prepare someone for their wedding night? I mean, that's some pretty intensive training. People train to be engineers in less time.
That aside, I am not sure how I feel about the incest and sex with minors. Well, that's not true, I can't fathom why incest is illegal unless it is to prevent inbreeding and causing mutation in the children. Even that is pretty thin. But the sex with minors thing... It would surely give them serious issues but I am not sure if that is a reflection of the event itself or if it is fitting into a world that considers it "evil" that causes the problem.
Before anyone freaks out on me, I am not condoning any course of action. I am merely pointing out that it is unclear (at least to me) whether this stupid assholes actions should be considered universally "wrong" or not.
[edit: fixing quotes]
Theists are just as disgusting as atheists the difference is, as Hamby pointed out at one point (at least I think it was Hamby), that theists have a 'get out of jail free' card. They have an excuse that is universally accepted by others of their cloth.
I think the conversations about naming good atheists and bad theists is not helpful. We are merely pointing at a person in the group and saying "look, he is what that group is made of" when we deny that a crazy atheist is what our group is made of. Evidence that the acts they commit were done for the sake of or supported by religion/supernaturalism is one thing, but pointing at the person themselves is not going to be fruitful.
[edit: spelling, man I suck at this]
Marcusfish,
I was not passing judgement on him at all with the exception of the hypocrisy issue and how he was emulating a person the Bible holds out as an example of a good man.

I dig, it's clear that you were not trying to play holier than thou.
However, if the character in the Bible is a good man and we are insinuating that the preacher was hypocritical by comparing himself to him, then we are classifying the actions that the preacher took as not good. Which is all fine, I was just throwing it out there to see if anyone was interested in the conversation.
I'm not trying to start a moral relativism vs moral objectivism conversation. I have read enough about said topic to know that it is going nowhere. I was just bringing into question some of our strictly held beliefs (current topic for example) to see if they hold up under slightly closer evaluation. It's a current fascination of mine, social contract etc.
