Now, I'm guilty of looping the bikini scene from 'The dukes of Hazzard' a couple of times, but even that measure of irrational behavior PALES in comparison to someone being angry with the empty air and thinking it is a good thing.

My 12-year-old daughter went on her FIRST overnight out of town trip sans family members.

For achieving the Honor Roll all year. she was treated to: a trip to the aquarium, a dance/pizza party on a river boat, and Six Flags over Georgia for a day.

Dad(me) gave her a cellphone to take with her so as to maintain some semblance of a 'leash' on a girl that is 12 going on 17.

Mom fretted.

We both remember 12, barely. We both remember our lives. It was I who reminded my spouse that we did not have the luxury/hardship of having caring parents that actually gave a damn whether or not we got laid on the field trip.

While she and I have become fairly decent human beings, it is my sincere hope that our enviable daughter's life will eclipse what measure of success we can attribute to our 'different' upbringing.

I'd still love her if she became a pop star, but I hope to ensure that she knows the difference between tuna and chicken as well as a few of the other important life lessons.
