I'm bit of a novice when it comes to introspective psychology. Any thoughts/opinions/critiques?

questions of origin for the Atheist

Forgive my ignorance, but I am curious about Atheists' beliefs about the universe. What is a singularity? Compressed matter of infinite density, a mass of infinite gravity? Two problems with the BB that have been bothering me are 1) Gravity existed after the BB; and 2) Gravity is a measure of force (attractive) between matter, meaning particles had to have existed before the BB - albeit packed together in infinite density. Is this correct?

Do Atheists believe in BB thoery, String theory or 11 Dimensional theory (sometimes called 26D theory I think)? I know most Atheists believe in evolution, but what about the origins of the universe?

Sorry if these have already been answered btw.

God & Purpose

So far I've seen a lot of tossing around of assertions by both sides (including myself) of their reasons for believing in x, y, or z. It's all getting pretty boring in a lot of areas since morals can be used to justify absolutely anything.

I just have two questions and I'd like a structured response.

What purpose does your god's existence give me?

(I'm not talking about any context of having respect for something that might have created me, that in of itself is not purpose imo)

Why is that purpose valid above all others?

Atheists are often an unfairly feared and scorned group. Many people tend to look upon them with disdain just because they have doubts about theology and like to go on TV and scream about how the majority of Americans are stupid for believing in God. This has led many religious people to have negative misconceptions about atheists, thinking among other things that they are followers of Satan.

That’s ridiculous. Atheists don’t worship Satan. They worship Athor, rational god of logic, who cherishes all that is logical and smites all that is illogical, such as religion. His worshipers leave him gifts of logic, like Sudoku puzzles, at his altar so that Athor might bestow upon them rational thought and they can better spot ideas that are stupid and worth mocking. This leads to the greatest gift Athor has to offer his followers: a feeling of superiority.

It's barely worth the effort, but if you're inclined to bait the god-botherers this isn't a bad place to play.

The comments section is hilarious.

Oh Damn... Evangelism + Sex advice = Disaster

 Pineapple, you'll love this one:

Quote:
Teenage pregnancies and syphilis have risen sharply among a generation of American school girls who were urged to avoid sex before marriage under George Bush's evangelically-driven education policy, according to a new report by the US's major public health body.

LINK

Here's another sticky correlation.  If it's not religious belief causing this... what is it?

Quote:
The CDC says that southern states, where there is often the greatest emphasis on abstinence and religion, tend to have the highest rates of teenage pregnancy and STDs.

Speaking of religion and reality checks, theist advocates of the empirically demonstrable failure that is Abstinence Only Education have this to say:

Quote:
But supporters of abstinence-based education said that the new report shows that there is too little not too much emphasis on discouraging sex before marriage.

So, Pineapple, would you like to offer your explanation for why this isn't the fault of theists and theism?

Bad advice for atheists

Internet christian Doug Eaton is kind enough to give advice to us! Isn't that nice of him? And he gets everything so right too...

I'm tired of the "Atheism Causes X" strawman

I’d like to highlight the fallacy/strawman that’s annoying me the most right now.

Theist: “You atheists are wrong for saying that atheism causes people to be good people.”  (Or, causes societies to be less dysfunctional, or causes people to go to jail less, or whatever&hellipEye-wink

Let me say this clearly and unequivocably.  ATHEISM DOESN’T CAUSE ANYTHING. I don’t claim that atheism makes me a better person, or that it cures depression or causes rational thinking or anything else.

Atheism is not a philosophy.  It is not a moral code.  Philosophically speaking, atheism is a giant hole waiting to be filled.  That is, anyone who rejects the claim that there is a God has to come up with alternate explanations for the things God is reported to be responsible for — or leave questions unanswered for lack of a good explanation.   To say that one is an atheist is only to say that they have rejected one explanation for something.  It says absolutely nothing whatsoever about what they have accepted, or indeed, if they have accepted any explanation at all.

Got Ten Minutes and a Strong Stomach?

Ben Stein is one of my least favorite people in the world.  Watching this video is harder than watching Kirk Cameron, and that's saying a lot.
