Secular education vs. religious education
Submitted by atheistannie on November 17, 2010 - 10:05am.I recently watched Richard Dawkins on The Big Debate on youtube.com. The subject was on religious education in Britain’s Schools. I can speak from personal experience on the issue first hand. I want to give a little background on myself, so you understand where I’m coming from as an Atheist on these views. I have and always seen myself as an Atheist. In Dawkin’s ‘The God delusion’ he lists 7 possibly categories one considers themselves to belong to. He states that you wouldn’t find too many in the 7 category, but I believe I fall into that category. Meaning I have never believed in anyway shape or form in a higher being or supernatural order at work, no question, absolutely no agnosticism. I always questioned religion, even at a young age. From the moment I could speak, I always questioned, inquired and severely dismissed as fairy tales.
My comment to Pastor Bill Randles about Blasphemy Challenge
Submitted by Sapient on November 17, 2010 - 2:52am.I just posted a comment in response to a blog post that discussed new atheists and the Blasphemy Challenge. (I still encourage creating Blasphemy Challenge videos)
Here is what I had to say...
We are not assaulting children and the naive. We are trying to help them escape their fear. You would have people believe there is an eternal torture that awaits them if they don't believe and think certain things. Those things are not proven or provable in any meaningful sense... yet millions believe due in large part to fear. You may not think much of the fear of hell today, but as a child it is essential to the brainwashing of almost all Christians.
So sir, for you to use language claiming it is atheists who are "assaulting" others, is highly ironic considering you are using more fear tactics to scare someone back into faith. We are doing this for you, or anyone who was brainwashed by religion... not because we're into Satan or assaulting people. Watch some Blasphemy Challenge videos and you'll see just what kind of people took the challenge, the point was to show off how normal atheists are, we're not a group of devil worshipping baby eating child assaulters as you and your ilk would like to scare Christians into thinking.

I am not perfect, nor is anyone else.

I am not perfect, nor is anyone else.
In the past few months, I have paid my rent a bit late twice and had my check bounce twice. So this month, I knew for a fact that I was going to actually see my landlord on the first of the month and there is plenty of money in my account. Well gee whiz...
In fact, my landlord is my GF's father and I saw him in the context of him dropping her off after her brother's birthday party. So I had the check written and handed it to him. If nothing else, I should get points for the act of contrition.
Of course the real world is never simple enough to actually make sense.
My landlord used my rent check as a book mark. Then he returned it to the library.
I tend to think that my bank has probably heard everything by now. Heck but every time I use an ATM, I stand informed of the fact that they have existed for 168 years and have enjoyed zero bailouts. Yah, that is important to the economy in general but fails as far as humor goes.
Even so, this one made the guy on the phone remark that this is one that has never happened before.
Please help an atheist family in need...
Submitted by Sapient on September 29, 2010 - 10:27pm.You may remember "Rapture Right " a Christian parody group that has pranked RRS users (at my request) on several occasions. Sadly one of the two brothers that make up "Rapture Right" had a tragedy strike his daughter recently. His life hasn't been the same since. His daughter Ella is currently in a coma which she slipped into after having a cancerous tumor removed from her brain. If you are able to help financially please consider sending a few dollars to help out. A full story is available at: http://www.hope4ella.com

The Word is: Physicalism
Submitted by Wonderist on September 22, 2010 - 2:45pm.In a recent article from Seed, David Weisman debunks the idea of a unified mind, and in so doing also debunks the idea of a unified soul.
I was struck by the following quote in which he expresses regret at the lack of a word for capturing the idea that the mind is entirely physical:
I wish there were a term in the English language that honestly captures the idea that all we experience is due to brain function. ”Materialism” comes close, but is laden with excess metaphysical baggage. The philosopher John Searle coined “biological naturalism” as a mind-body theory within philosophy, and that comes very close. “Asoulism” is more modest: a simple disbelief in the existence of souls based on evidence.
Well David, I have good news for you! There is such a word! And it inspired my second "The Word is:" post:
The word is: Physicalism
