Call Sapient and the RRS!

We were selected to help beta test a new revolutionary piece of software. Jaxtr, will allow you to type in your phone number and it'll proceed to call you on your phone. After it connects to you, it will dial Sapients computer and connect the call for you. You can also use this service to leave voicemails! If you do choose to leave a voicemail, feel free to sound off about anything. We might even respond to your comments on the show! If this service can meet our needs and work well we may use it as a call in feature for our shows. Please add comments below with your thoughts on this new service, and how well it worked for you. Here's an FAQ from Jaxtr if you're curious.

What a nifty thing! I left

What a nifty thing! I left you a voice message just to see how it worked. My phone rang and, magic, I got your voicemail.

What did my voicemail say?

What did my voicemail say? It didn't ask me to record anything for the message. I did get your message, thanks.

Feel free people to leave a message saying whatever you want that you think might sound cool on the show. So many radio stations play their voicemails on air, I think it would be cool. I'm envisioning people calling and saying things like

"This is __________ and I joined your site about 3 months ago, and have really enjoyed it, thanks so much for being blunt about religion. Do you believe that nutbag ___________ who said _________ on the board? Who does he think he's kidding?"

"Hey this is _________ and I just called to say that before I found this site I was lost and had nothing, but now that I believe in the RRS I have everything, and there's nothing anybody can do to take that away from me" <-- this message would sound best accompanied with loud sobbing

"Hey this message is for Rook/Kelly/Mike (whatever), I just wanted to tell you that the __________ you said to __________ was brilliant. I learned something new there, thanks for the show!"

"Hey I saw that thing you wrote about how you want people to call here crying about how much they love the RRS and equate it to how theists feel about god. I just wanted to tell you I thought that was really funny."

You get the jist. Of course, I also see this as a great line for theists to sound off. They can record themselves in audio and if it's something worth giving a rebuttal to, we likely will.

This is Weird

Here's something weird. I was going to use the voicemail feature again so I could tell you exactly what it said. (I'm old. The short term memory is shot.)

I click on the "leave message" box and it still has my phone number in it. I try to click to have it ring me and connect the call, but all it will do is tell me to dial the number myself. Your number displays in the text box and after using this, anyone using this will have your number displayed.

I do remember that the outgoing message said something about "save the number" which I thought was odd at the time. I attempted to clear the box (even refreshed the screen) and re-enter my number, but it won't allow me to.

I'm now suspicious about what this service is doing with my unlisted number.

I had the same thing happen upon testing.  Although the number it displays for me is not my number, it's a number they use to route to me (I think).  This is a way for both parties to correspond confidentialy.

I don't think they're doing anything on purpose, but I will alert them to your concerns.  I'm working directly with a (owner?) higher up there, and they're great with corresponding via email.  They've even been to this page.

Thanks Brian; this is very useful feedback. You are absolutely right in your response on your page. The number we give people is a private number assigned to each caller that only they can use to contact you (so they don’t have to be behind a PC every time they want to reach you). I think we will need to communicate that better on the widget.

Free?

I'm curious about the "free" part. The number to call to connect with your voicemail starts with 1+712 (Council Bluffs, IA). The only toll free area codes I'm familiar with (and according to several Google searches) are 800, 866, 877 and 888. The area code on your number is not one of those.

That leads me to think that the caller will be charged long distance fees for the call.

That is correct although the system was supposed to work so that it would call you back on that follow up call.  I noticed after a while it reset itself and allowed me to call myself again without having to use the long distance number.  The 712 number can be taken on the road and used on a cell phone.  I think we've definetly found an area he should add on to though, and that would be the ability to have the system call you as opposed to you having to dial the long distance number, which I believe is how it's supposed to work all the time.  It just seems to get stuck in the mode where it's giving you my number and not allowing you to have Jaxtr call you.

You Might Want To Post Something About That

You might want to say something in the post that unless Jaxtr calls you, it will be a long distance call and fees will apply.
