Catholic Church Excommunicates A Nun Who Approved An Abortion
Catholic Church Excommunicates A Nun Who Approved An Abortion
I found this one on the news tonight. Apparently, they are even further out of control that I suspected.
Summarizing from a few articles on the case, what happened is that a nun who served for many years on the ethics board of a catholic hospital ended up in a position where she had to decide whether to allow an abortion to happen or not.
Specifically, the case at hand is that of a 27 year old woman and mother of four previous children who was 11 weeks pregnant and had a serious medical condition that would have killed her if she had not had an abortion. OK, let's consider this seriously:
The pregnancy was far from any point where the eventual child could have been ex-utero viable. There was no way that the mother could have lived to the point where the theoretical child could have been saved. So if the hospital did not perform an abortion, there would have been a family with mother and no baby could possibly have been the end result.
So here is our nun put in a position where one choice is to see that the family continue to have a mother. No fifth child is going to happen but at least the other rug rats get to have a mommy. The other choice also results in no fifth child but here the rug rats have no mommy.
Now I would rather not delve into the question of whether the “child” is a human or not but one thing is crystal clear. This “child” would never have been born.
Here is a link to the statement from the bishop:

If I am reading that correctly, not only has the nun been excommunicated but also the staff of the hospital who were involved. Not only the doctors, nurses and med techs but also anyone on the ethics panel who allowed the matter to go forward.
The bishop has made it clear that the problem (apart from the doctrinal issue around abortion) is also that of embroiling the church in a scandal. Knock me over with a feather but the RC church seems to be in the news quite a bit in the past few years because men of the cloth have brought scandal upon the RC church over the buggering of little boys. Yet those priests have not been excommunicated.

Oh, but you see, raping
Oh, but you see, raping little children is perfectly fine. If you're into that, they'll make sure you have a steady supply of fresh young children to violate. Saving potential mothers from childbirth-related deaths--EVEN if it's an 11 year old girl pregnant because she's been raped by her own stepfather--that's not okay at all. In fact, they'll excommunicate you and make the rapist stepfather a saint.
from the bishop's statement
Seems to me to be a good time to leave the church permanently. Though from the article I found in the AZ Republic newspaper, the nun in question was the Mother Superior prior to the abortion.
Looking up pulmonary hypertension in pregnancy, yes, there are treatments that may keep the mother alive if the condition develops late in the pregnancy. Statistically, there is a 30-56% fatality rate. Often the mother's health is permanently damaged, with the possibility of a heart transplant in her future.
And, it's in Arizona. I am so glad I am from Arizona and not living in Arizona.

I cant say I disagree with
I cant say I disagree with the Church. If I join a club or sports team and they have rules and I knowingly join and break the rules, why would the club be wrong?
NOW having said that, I am not saying I agree with the clubs rules. I AM saying that if I chose to belong to that club knowing before hand what their requirements are, how are they wrong?
Now if I insisted on still being Catholic what I could do is say "fuck the church" and start my own church.
I do agree with the assessment that it is laughable and sad at the same time that protecting child molesters is more important than protecting reproductive rights.
If I own a bar and I chose to tell my employees not to wear torn jeans and one shows up with torn jeans, making the argument that it wouldn't affect sales(which might be the case) is irrelevant.
I'd say if the nun in question still wants to be a Catholic, then start your own Church and tell the Pope to fuck off. Personally I don't think she should even be a fan of fiction, but she did join a club that has rules.
If I own a strip joint that caters to men who like skinny hot chicks why would I, or should I be forced to hire fat women?
If the Church has a rule that you cant support abortion and be in a position of power, it doesn't matter how stupid the rule is, if you join knowing the rule, you know before hand what you are getting into.
The entire notion of sky daddy clubs is absurd to me. But I would expect in any organization, no matter how absurd their positions are, that when you join one and you know going in what is expected, it shouldn't be a shock when you rock the boat that your actions within the club garner such a reaction.
I am not saying what they did to the nun was right, I am simply saying it shouldn't shock anyone considering the Churches absurd positions.
