Bill Maher on religion again....GO BILL!

His much needed and refreshing skepticism hits the media again. Here is a link to a recent story.

Oh my non-existent God

Man, those comments just prove his point. I haven't seen so much ignorant rhetoric in one place for at *least* a week.

Why is it that "Christians are under attack by the media," yet the assumption by most media is that people are Christian? Why is it that the worst attack on Obama is that he's Muslim? (Which he is not-- he's Christian. Hey, does that constitute an attack on a Christian?)

Christians enjoy the majority of power in the US, to the point where it's damned near impossible for an atheist to get elected to office. (Even Representative Pete Stark didn't advertise his lack of belief in a supreme being for almost 35 years.) Why is it that Christians inisist on feeling martyred?

I have an hypothesis. I think it's because they don't want to admit that the current mess in the US is their fault. They'd rather feel persecuted, as that would make them the minority, and absolve them of responsibility, so they can say things like, "Once Mike Huckabee is in office and our country is back on a Christian path like the founding fathers wanted, God will take us to the promised land."

I find it hard to imagine Thomas Jefferson voting for Huckabee. But maybe that's just because I'm too busy persecuting Christians.

I laughed at most of those

I laughed at most of those comments myself, but some of them almost made me cry because of their ignorance. The hatred in most of their comments is no surprise, but if you called them on it you would get the standard answer, hating the sin not the sinner bullshit.

Bill is wrong on one point to some degree in that the evangelicals really don't have as much political clout as he says they do. Abortion is still legal, prayer still isn't mandatory in school and homosexuals have the right to equal employment without discrimination. I am not saying that they still aren't a nuisance, but they are so disorganized I don't know if they are a real threat. They keep voting for someone who they believe shares their values and unfortunately their short-sideness is killing our country. Another thing that bothers me about the religious right is that they would rather see a crooked "christian" in office than an honest atheist. I feel sorry for all the red-staters.

Let's take religion out of the public office and use rational thinking instead of faith. Let's assume that god isn't coming to the rescue and use our two hands working instead of praying. I am sure those two hands dirty from work will be more useful than two clean hands from prayer.

Yeah, the comments are

Yeah, the comments are pretty funny.

"Maher will burn in Hell. And I hope I get to watch." ...because that's what Jesus would say.

Beucase all they know is pity and guilt.  Which, ironically enough, is not what Jesus was about.  Granted he was dogmatic but he was capable of reasoning with others if he needed to without having to rely on the pity or guilt card.

Wow, the comment section is

Wow, the comment section is littered with personal attacks and things that have absolutely nothing to do with any of the points put up.  I would love to put a Christian in a proverbial corner and have him answer.  "Well, what is the difference between a Talking snake and a Magic Mirror?  What makes the Ark of the Covenant less magical than the Sword of Excalibur?  How about Moses parting a giant sea with a stick, and Superman who can Leap tall buildings in a single bound?

I think the problem is quite simple, people don't like to think.  Every moral decision or idea of concrete reality apart from what slaps them in the face is nothing more than an emotion-driven delusion.  People who don't stop of think about things that are the most vital in their lives annoy me intensely.

To go beyond your limits you must first find them.

You already know the lame answers you'll get:

"Because God is REAL and those other things aren't!"

or

"Because the Bible says it's true!"

And that settles it!
