Rate Your State

http://www.usatoday.com/news/graphics/pew-religion-08/flash.htm

Interesting little interactive map showing religious affiliation by state, broken down by denomination.

Looks like I'm most likely

Looks like I'm most likely to get a date this weekend if I take a trip down to Mississippi.

The pew report categorizes Unitarians in the "Other Faiths" category.  While the number is small... I wonder how most atheists that attend a UU answered?

I was a little surprised by the relatively high number of unaffiliated people in Georgia, and then I remembered that we have this thing most southern states don't... a big city with an international airport and daily trips to New York.

Sons of bitches Gannett and

Sons of bitches Gannett and Pew.

What the fuck is a 'black protestant'? People that go to 'black churches'?

They split them up as if it's an important consideration. Motherfuckers. Have a general category like 'Protestant', but specify race AND leave off 'Atheist' by calling it 'unaffiliated'.

Make a nationwide map using 35,556 people?

I don't know about this particular breakdown, but there are black denominations, particularly in the deep south.  If I'm not mistaken, there's actually a specifically black episcopalian denomination out there somewhere, although I don't think it's very big.

It's as colloquial as my locals referring to the gas station on 17th street as the 'BlackSak' instead of 'KwikSak' by virtue of its clientele. It just fucking floors me that it would even be a consideration in a poll, even one about theists.

unaffiliated is the umbrella

unaffiliated is the umbrella term for:

atheist 1.6%

agnostic 2.4%

nothing in particular 12.1%

I have less issue with this than uu being included under the "other religions" category.  combined with the fact that many followers of eastern religious tend to do the 'cafeteria plan' where they pick the best combination for them, i really have to doubt the accuracy of these types of surveys.

Hitchens

I agree with Hitchens alot when it comes to these polls.  They are interesting but worth very little.

Most people have to lie on these things.  There aren't enough churches in this country to hold everyone that says they go to church.  People simply have it in their mind that they belong to a certain denomination even though they don't practice it and answer accordingly on these polls.

 Holy shit look at the

Holy shit look at the fuckin' Okies!  53% Evangelical!

And as to the Black Protestant thing, that's actually a useful demographic in the political sense.  Specifically Black churches and denominations are usually more concerned with civil rights and support a more liberal fiscal policy than pretty much any kind of white church.

Huh.  Dirty Jersey is 42% Catholic.  I can see that.  Unaffiliated and evangelical are tied at 12%  I was surprised that it only rated 6% jews.  There are a lot more than that, I'm sure.

In Monty Python's "Spamalot" (The recent broadway production), there's a segment where Arthur is given a quest to have a successful Broadway play.  He falls into despair because Broadway won't be invented for many centuries.  His quest is hopeless.  Fortunately, someone tells him the secret -- he needs a Jew if he's going to invent successful Broadway musicals.

So, Arthur scours the countryside looking for a Jew.  After much fruitless searching, he still hasn't found one.  Finally, very meekly, his trusty sidekick, Patsy, says, "Um, actually sir, I'm a Jew."

Arthur replies, "Well why didn't you say so earlier?!"

Patsy comes back without skipping a beat.  "Well, sir, It's usually a bad thing to mention to a heavily armed Christian."

Cool, thanks for sharing.

Maryland is 17% unaffiliated, 5% Jewish, 18% Catholic.

Not bad.

HOLY SHIT!! Alabama is 49% Evangelical! Remind me to never visit.

You know what's the New Jersey State bird? The Housefly.

The New Jersey state tree? The telephone pole.

That's sweet, Matt.

Sorry, 17 until May.

But don't feel gross, I don't feel 17...more like 21.

I heard that one, but with "Alabama" replacing "Pennsyltucky."
