Mom claims Daughter possessed--stabs her

A woman was arrested and charged with the murder of her 6 year old daughter. Nelly Vazquez-Salazar, 25, at first claimed that her daughter 'attacked' her with a knife (umm..she is 6) forcing her to push her daughter up against the wall and stab her.
Nelly's actions : Stabs her daughter in the face, neck, chest and arms...slashes her neck and proceeds to stab through a picture with jesus, mary and joseph and leave it next to her daughter, tells the police her daughter was possessed.

I really want to know, I mean it is eating me alive: Do people that commit violent crimes think that stating they are religious or that they were defending themselves against some 'evil' demon think it will lessen the severity of the punishment? Is this Nelly Vazquez-Salazar really that religious or using it to make her seem like a good person in the eyes of other 'religious' people?

So it looks like the actual story is that the poor kid was sleepwalking and scared her half-awake mother so much that she lost it. Instead of calling an ambulance, she made up the demon bit. Wow. Thanks for the help, grandma (who put the idea into her head that the kid was possessed).

This is the sort of brain dead quackery I am worried about. I really need to finish that second part to the supernatural/haunting blog I was working on. People are so quick to claim demon, as if that word signifies evil. In fact that word means nothing of the sort. People too ignorant to realize that are why we have murders like this occurring. No, there is no devilish minion in your daughter, house or work place - just in your head.

Ok first of all, why is everyone in my state suddenly going crazy? There must be something in the air, now that the weather just warmed up a week ago. Maybe the Holy Spirit?

Basically, the most special treatment this woman should get is a battery of psychological tests.
Plus, Rook's statement reminded me of a quote on fstdt. This woman's car alarm kept going off inappropriately, and she said something along the lines of, "I have no doubt that that car is possessed by demons." Really. Of all the prominent people Satan's minions could possess, they decided to go for a car. If that's not logical thinking, I don't know what is. That woman may want to get her car exorcised at the local auto repair shop.
Incidentally, whatever happened to those nice demons my Greek ancestors were so fond of? Why do they always have to get a bad reputation?

Topanga, from what I see on a quick google search, has lighter colored eyes, has much fuller cheeks, the mouth on Topanga is much more broad, topanga's jawline is stronger, nose is very different...

Yeah, Grandma put the thoughts of sleepwalking=demon possession into the woman's head and when something strange happened during her child's sleepwalking, she brutally murdered her because of a naive superstition planted in her head. What a terrible situation of yet another case where ignorance leads to violence.

It scares the bejeebers out of me that in the 21st century, in the most technologically advance culture on the planet, that a statistically significant (up to 85%) portion of the population think that demons are REAL.

Yes, it is my pic, although nobody has ever drawn a comparison between me & Topanga. I'm flattered though, cuz I'm a huuuuge Boy Meets World fan! I used to watch the reruns every day on Disney Channel (back when I was young enough to watch Disney Channel heh). My brother & I still quote stuff from it all the time.
I apologize if my pic detracts from intellectual discussion! Most of the pictures of me have other people in them, and I don't like to use those on sites like this because I don't think my friends would be thrilled to have their image associated with causes like this without their permission. I only have a few good pics of only me, and I was sick of seeing the others cuz I use them as avatars/profile pics on other sites. But if people want me to change my photo, that can certainly be arranged.

Attractive women do not have a right to be self conscious. =P That being said, this topic has been derailed, but I think when it comes down to it, we derail these sorts of topics on purpose. There is definitely something to be said psychologically for making light out of events of such a travesty. This woman was a detriment to our society, our species, and intelligent people everywhere. Taking it upon ourselves to distract from that is definitely a mechanism we have evolved for the sake of survival. And, discussing another survival instinct - being attracted to and by the opposite sex - is just a course our mind takes I suppose. It could be worse...we could all be discussing Matt Shizzles videos where he has underwear on his head... I like this alternative better than that one.

My point of view:
Religious reasons for a murder = electric chair.
The sad thing is, yes, committing a religiously motivated crime can get you a lighter sentence in some states. Or at least it used to. I'm no lawyer so I can't say if any states have those laws still on the books or not.
